Janet Read Higgins

Janet “Jan” Read Higgins, 92, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on December 29, 2022 at the age of 92. She was born in New Orleans on July 25, 1930 to Benjamin Read and Jeanne Sevin Read. Jan graduated from Eleanor McMain High School and obtained a B.S. degree in elementary education from Loyola University. She taught for a total of 28 years, 25 of which were spent teaching first grade at St. Philip Neri in Metairie. Following her retirement, she volunteered for several additional years, assisting with 1st grade reading. Jan married Don Higgins on August 16, 1952, moved to Metairie, and raised 6 children. Jan was a devout Catholic and a longstanding member of St. Philip Neri Church. She remained active in her church until her stroke in March of 2014, at which time she moved to Chateau de Notre Dame until her death. Despite her many physical challenges, Jan maintained her zest for life and was known for her kindness, great sense of humor, and love of family gatherings. She was lovingly cared for by the staff of Chateau, her caretakers, and family.

Jan is survived by her children, Linda Landsmann, Liz Kraft (Tim), Sharon Higgins, and Tyler Higgins (Rosemarie), daughter-in-law, Joel (Steve), grandchildren, Jeremy, Jacob, David, Tanya, Kristy, Ryan, Robby, Chris, Kelly, Olivia, and several great-grandchildren. Jan was preceded in death by her husband, Louis “Don” Higgins, her sister, Marlene Bailey, and her sons, Steve and Larry.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2023 at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Blvd. Metairie, LA. Visitation will be held from 9Am-11AM with a Mass to begin at 11AM. Interment will follow at St. Charles Borromeo Cemetery in Thibodaux.
