John, affectionately known as “Gus,” passed away on Friday, February 1, 2013. He was born in 1947 in Fort Worth, TX to the late Fredric S. McLaren and the late Rosemary C. McLaren. He is survived by his wife Phyllis, and his children, Becky (and Keith Ferguson), Nancy (and Chris Mangan), and Ben (and Camille) McLaren. His siblings include Kathleen (and Courtenay Thompson) of Dallas, TX, and the late Michael D. McLaren. Gus leaves behind 6 grandchildren: Matthew, Katherine, and Collin Ferguson, Paige and Declan Mangan, and Sean McLaren. He earned a scholarship for swimming and was a Pi Kappa Alpha at Tulane University where he graduated with a BS in Chemical Engineering. He also earned a Masters of Business from the University of Houston. He served his country honorably as a Captain in the Army prior to beginning his civilian career. He worked as a Chemical Engineer for Union Carbide and Dow for over 40 years, receiving numerous accolades and retiring in 2011. He will be remembered for his brilliant mind, patriotism, and generous heart. Gus loved Tulane sports, the New Orleans Saints, teaching people, traveling, and the outdoors. Services will be held at: Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home at 4747 Veterans Blvd, Metairie, LA, 70006. Visitation will be Monday, February 4, from 5-7pm with a ceremony to follow at 7pm.
