John Ross Schmidt passed away on Tuesday evening, January 2, 2018. He was 65 years old. Beloved husband of Ann Marie Burregi Schmidt for over 18 years. Loving father of Roy Joseph Distefano, Sarah Rose Schmidt, and Sean Ross Schmidt. Brother of Brian Schmidt (Connie) and Rebecca “Becky” Schmidt. Son of the late Willie “Bill” and Nora Beth Schmidt. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. John was a native of the New Orleans area for over 60 years and recently retired to his summer home in Bay St. Louis. He was a well loved and respected educator for 38 years, teaching at West Jefferson, Ecole Classique, and Archbishop Rummel High School. Outside the classroom, he had also been a professional tennis instructor, owner of a landscaping business, and a police officer for NOPD, Madisonville Police Dept and most recently, Hancock County Police Dept. He devoted himself whole heartedly to making a positive impact on his students’ lives and the communities in which he lived. His passion for the game of tennis will be remembered by all. He started his own tennis company, Hot Shots, in the early 90s through which he coached many youths to national rankings and titles. Most recently, he worked at Chateau Golf Country Club giving tennis lessons. John thoroughly enjoyed landscaping, as seen by his own beautiful home garden as well as the courtyard garden at Rummel that he designed while working there. He loved spending time in his garden with his wife and children, and taking daily walks with his dog, Cocoa. John truly lived life to its fullest, never taking a day for granted. He will be missed by so many.

Relatives and friends of the family, former students of Ecole Classique and Archbishop Rummel, and all former colleagues are invited to attend a Memorial Service at LEITZ-EAGAN Metairie, 4747 Veterans Memorial Boulevard, on Friday afternoon, January 12, 2018 at 1:00 pm. Visitation will begin at 11:00 in the morning. An online guestbook is available at www.leitzeaganfuneralhome.com.

I am proud to have been a friend of John. He was one of the most peaceful fellas I have ever met. His love for tennis was contagious, but more so his love for life. Thanks to the family for sharing his photos. Game , set, and match...Mr. Schmidt.

I loved talking to John when picking up my daughter from tennis. He always shared some interesting fact like the great teacher that he was. He was fantastic at spotting someone's weaknesses and helping them work through it. His patience was unending. During most lessons, you also got a really interesting history lesson as well. He will be sorely missed by my daughter and myself.

Sarah and Sean Jim and I are so very sad and sorry for your loss. I loved watching John on the tennis court with all the kids next to the pre-school, I also loved having fun conversations with him about everything and I remember that little car he loved so much. Our thoughts and prayers are with you both.

We sure will miss John and his visits here. I've known him my whole life and was a best friend to my dad. I will miss hearing all the stories of tennis that he would rave about. Until we meet again

My daughter had been taking tennis lessons with Mr Schmidt until his passing. He was a talented educator and super intelligent... always surprised me with his seemingly endless knowledge of different subjects. I appreciate the brief time I got to spend with him and my prayers go out to his family. He is missed.
