Joseph Marion Gautreaux III

Joseph was born on April 21, 1948, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Joseph M. Gautreaux Jr. and Mary Gautreaux, who preceded him in death.

He attended St. Frances Cabrini Grammar School and was a proud graduate of St. Aloysius High School, Class of 1966. He continued his education at Louisiana State University in New Orleans, where he earned a bachelor’s degree and an engineering degree through a biomedical emphasis program. During his college years, he also served in the United States Army National Guard and later worked for a time as an engineer.

Joseph went on to earn his medical degree from LSU Medical School in New Orleans and completed his residency and specialty training in otolaryngology — ear, nose, and throat medicine — at LSU Shreveport. He also worked at Charity Hospital in New Orleans before establishing his own medical practice.

Medicine became one of the great passions of Joseph’s life. He devoted decades to caring for his patients and was known for his intelligence, determination, tremendous work ethic, and genuine love of his profession.

Outside of medicine, Joseph loved sports, sports, and more sports. He was a devoted fan of the New York Yankees, New Orleans Saints, and LSU Tigers, especially LSU football. A Saints fan from the very beginning, he was a season-ticket holder during the team’s first three seasons beginning in 1967.

He also enjoyed golf, bowling, spending time with friends, and his beloved dogs.

A lifelong Catholic, Joseph remained grounded in his faith through the end of his life. The day before his passing, Father Chris of St. Mary Magdalene Parish came to his bedside, where Joseph received Penance, Holy Communion, and Last Rites.

Joseph is survived by his daughters, Nicole Gautreaux Solari and Jeanne’ Gautreaux Morris (Dr. Joseph Morris III); his grandchildren, Olivia Morris, Joseph Morris IV, and James Morris; Nigel Taylor, whom he loved as a son; his brothers, George Gautreaux (Nancy Gautreaux) and James Gautreaux; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, friends, colleagues, and patients.

Joseph will be remembered for his intelligence, humor, work ethic, love of sports, devotion to family, and the unmistakable personality he brought to everything he did.
