With loving memory, we honor the life of Joseph Louis Landry, Sr., a native son of New Orleans, who passed away peacefully on January 19, 2026, at the age of 90. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and a respected pillar of his community.
Joseph was the devoted husband of Joyce Ceasar Landry. He loved his wife dearly, and their life together was the pride and joy of his heart. He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved children from his first union with Merrian Landry: Ardorn Landry and Jonette Landry, both of Los Angeles, California. He also leaves to cherish his memory his beloved children from his marriage to Joyce Ceasar Landry: Monique Landry-James (Tiffany) and Joseph Louis Landry, Jr. (Tasher). He is also lovingly remembered by his stepchildren: Willie Bland (Maria), Linda Bland (Lithia), and Michelle Bland Anderson (Timothy). Joseph’s legacy continues through 13 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.
Joseph lived a life of pioneering spirit and dedicated service. He made history as one of the first Black waiters at two of New Orleans’ most iconic restaurants, Commander’s Palace and The Court of Two Sisters. He was a gifted mixologist at Pat O’Brien’s and a savvy entrepreneur who owned a clothing business. His passion for horses led him to the track, where he worked as a thoroughbred horse trainer at the Fairgrounds Racetrack and remained a lifelong, knowledgeable handicapper. Committed to justice, he served on the NAACP Board (New Orleans Branch) and received its community service award. He also enjoyed sharing his charismatic presence in film and television, appearing in Law Abiding Citizen, Bad Lieutenant, and HBO’s Tremé.
His faith was a guiding force. Joseph initially attended Church of God in Christ under Pastor Jeffery Brown, where he served on the Youth Council and was known for helping others, especially by providing transportation for church members and seniors. He later joined Pentecost Baptist Church under Pastor Lionel Davis, and gave his time generously to the “Winning Souls for Christ” ministry in the St. Bernard Housing Project, counseling and guiding youth with care.
He was preceded in death by his son, Keith Landry; his parents, Herbert Landry, Sr. and Rose Maude Nichols Landry; and six siblings: Rose Mary Landry Thompson, Bertha Landry Ford, Herbert Landry, Jr., Phillip Landry, Sr., Ennis Patricia Landry Wooden, and Ida Landry Thompkins. He is survived by two siblings, Joan Louise Landry Alexander and Zachary Landry (Mary) of Breaux Bridge, Louisiana.
Joseph will be deeply missed and forever remembered for his strength, his laughter, and his enduring love.
Visitation will be held on January 31, 2026, from 9:00 am to 10:00 am at Pentecost Baptist Church, located at 1510 Harrison Ave, New Orleans, LA 70122, United States.
A funeral service will follow at the same location from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on January 31, 2026. Pastor Clayton Johnson will be presiding over the services.
