Kyoko "Yoshi" Britain

Born the middle child of a family with seven girls, Kyoko, known to her friends as Yoshi, spent her life laughing and making lots of friends from Tokyo, Japan to Germany to Mobile, AL. She met and married George Britain, when he was stationed in Japan in the Air Force. She was a military spouse for George's 20+ year military career, and a mother who put endless energy into her children, Maria and Jimmy. George and Yoshi were married for almost 60 years.

An essential part of the Mobile-Ichihara Sister City Association, she actively worked as a representative to Japan for more than 20 years. She put special effort into the Mobile International Festival held every November. She also worked as a Japanese language teacher at the University of South Alabama for several years. She belonged to the International Marriage Friendship Club, a group of Japanese women united by their experiences in postwar Japan and their subsequent lives in the US. She loved spending time with friends and people she cared about. She brought energy and life to everything – to the students she taught, the animals she fed, and the family she cared for and loved.

7 人姉妹の真ん中の子供として生まれた京子は、ヨシという名前でお友達に知られておりますが、日本の東京からドイツ、そしてアラバマ州のモービルに至るまでたくさんの友達を作り、笑顔一杯の人生でした。ヨシは、ジョージ・ブレッテンが空軍で日本に駐在していた時に知り合い結婚しました。彼女は、ジョージの20年以上にも渡る軍経歴を支えてきた軍人の妻であったし、自分の子供たちであるマリアとジミーに絶え間ない愛情を注ぎ入れました。ジョージとヨシは、約60年間も結婚しておりました。

ヨシは、モービルと市原市の姉妹都市協定の重要な役割を担う一員として20年以上にも渡ってモービルの日本代表として積極的に働きました。特に毎年 11 月に開催されるモービル インターナショナルフェスティバルには特別に力を注ぎました。ヨシは数年間、南アラバマ大学で日本語を教えたりもしました。そして彼女は,日系国際結婚友の会 (戦後日本での経験やその後の米国での生活によって一致団結した日本人女性グループ) にも所属しておりました。ヨシは自分の友人や大切な人たちと過ごすのが大好きでした。そして自分が教えた生徒たち、これまで飼ったペットたち、自分が世話し愛した家族全てに元気と生きる活力を与えてくれました。
