Leo John Stein

Leo John Stein died at his home Thursday, August 4, 2011, at the age of 88. He was the beloved husband of the late June Lorio for 62 years. He was the son of the late Ebert Stein and Henrietta Bopp; and father of Nancy Postell (Bill), Denis Stein (Pam), and Steven Stein (Theresa). He was the grandfather of Kristi Borne (Ronnie), Kelli Lee (Randy), Ashley Stein, Tyler Stein, Cameron Stein, Will Postell, and Aimee Postell. He was the great-grandfather of Laney Borne, Ava Borne, Anthony Lee, Payton Lee, Ashton Lee, William Postell, Robert Postell, and Sophie Postell.

He was born and raised in New Orleans and lived many years in River Ridge. He was a graduate of Alcee Fortier High School, served in the US Navy in World War II and Korea, and spent his working life as an electrician and glazer.

In World War II, he was decorated for his service as radioman aboard the destroyer USS Hambelton, in action throughout the Mediterrean and at Casablanca, Normandy, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. He was an eyewitness to the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay.

He proudly styled himself “The Mouth of the South” , and none who met him would disagree. He was known for his colorful personality, generosity, and devotion to his family. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Visitation will be at 11:00 am, Monday, August 8, 2011, Tharp-Sontheimer Funeral Home, 1600 North Causeway Blvd, Metairie, LA. Funeral service will be at 1:00 pm. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
