Louis Joseph Barattini Sr.

Louis Joseph Barattini, Sr., age 91, passed away on Thursday, January 16, 2014. Mr. Barattini was a native of New Orleans, LA and a resident of Metairie, LA. He is survived by his beloved wife, Delores Gray Abene Barattini; his children by his first marriage, Craig R. Barattini, Louis J. Barattini, Jr. and Debra B. Barr; his grandchildren, Brandi, Chelsea and Rachel Barattini; his stepson, James Ronald Abene and two great granddaughters. Son of the late Bartholomew Barattini and Mary Beleci Barattini. Mr. Barattini graduated from Peters High School in 1941. After his first job, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard and played the trumpet in the U.S. Coast Guard Band. He wanted to do more for the war effort so he was sent to the Pentagon where he was a key puncher (today’s equivalent of a computer operator). Mr. Barattini then went to gunner’s mate school for training and from there was shipped to the Pacific and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Coast Guard in 1946. Mr. Barattini loved to dance and belonged to three dance clubs; including New Kappa Rho and TOGOM. He was a life member of VFW Post 6640, American Legion Post 175, Disabled American Veterans, Cooties Pup Tent 3, 40 and 8 Club, Baseball Diamond Club, Shoulder to Shoulder Club, LSU/Tulane Boosters Club and the Thoth Carnival Club where he was king in 1957. Mr. Barattini also volunteered once a week delivering for Food for Friends. Mr. Barattini’s family would like to thank the staff of Ormond Care Center for their wonderful care and compassion. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Blvd., near Clearview Pkwy., in Metairie, LA on Monday, January 20, 2014 beginning at 9:00 AM with a Funeral Mass to follow at 1:00 PM in Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home’s chapel. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association, One Lakeway, 3900 N. Causeway Blvd., Suite 1200, Metairie, LA 70002.
