Obituary of Melvin Albert Dakin Sr.
Melvin Albert Dakin, Sr. 84, long time resident of New Orleans, passed away January 7, 2023 at his home in Metairie surrounded by family. He is survived by his loving wife, Trudy Rauch Dakin. Daughters, Melinda Dakin Dahmer (Ed), Yvette Dakin Dupuis (Mike), loving niece that was like a daughter, Peggy Hernandez, stepchildren, Kim Cox (Gary), Peter Giovenco (Denise), and Hope Inman (Johnny). Grandchildren, Ryan Dahmer (Shannon), Jared Dahmer (Carolina), Lauren Dupuis, Emily D. Zellner (Ty), step grandchildren, Dustin Smith, Brandon Johnson, Devan Cox, Brock Giovenco, Brittany Sullivan, Blake Lam, Baleigh Bosco, and Wyatt Evans. Great-grandchildren, Ava and Charles Dahmer, Hayes and Hutsyn Zellner, step great-grandchildren, Landon, Kaiden, Isabella, Brody, Liam, Braxton, Braylin, Addison, and Alaina. Melvin is preceded in death by his parents, John and Anna Dakin; son Melvin Dakin, Jr., siblings, John Dakin Jr., Anna Louise Dakin, Marie Dakin, Myrtle Norris, Frank Dakin, Helen Dakin, Dorothy Johnson, Shirley Mathews, Charlie Dakin, Catherine Matto and Albert Dakin. He is also preceded by his step grandchild, Devanee Cox, and step great grandchild, Malia Smith. Melvin, aka Big Mel, is a graduate of Redemptorist High School and a US Marine veteran. He will be fondly remembered by family and friends as a loving husband, father and grandfather. To know Mel is to love Mel. His witty personality was the life of the party, as he carried a happy and jovial personality that was infectious to all those around him. The family would like to extend a sincere thanks and gratitude to Guardian Angel Hospice for their tender care and emotional support. A memorial will be held at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd. Metairie, LA, on Monday, January 16, 2023. Visitation will begin at 9AM with Mass at 11AM. Inurnment will be private.
