

June 22, 2015 in Tickfaw, LA. He was born in Tickfaw, LA in 1927 and was a long time resident of both New Orleans and Tickfaw, LA. Mr. Scardina was preceded in death by his son, Michael J. Scardina, Jr., his parents, Peter and Mary (Cardella) Scardina, brothers Sam, Carlo, Joseph, and Anthony “Tony”, and sisters, Guida “Tiny”, Lucille, Phyllis “Phil”, and Mary. He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Carolyn (Marcel) Scardina and a daughter, Miriam (Barney) Bieber of Gulfport, MS and two grandsons, Matthew Bieber of Gulfport, MS and Michael Bieber of Denver, CO. He is survived by one sister, Rose (Royce) Callicotte of Jasper, TX as well as three step-children, Sidney (Becky) Miller, Belinda (Robert) Malley and Leona (Dwayne) Hopkins. He was grandfather to three step-grandchildren, Sidney III, Bridget and Derek and three step-great grandchildren, Luke, Avery and Sidney IV. Mr. Scardina was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II.
In 1949, he attended The School of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning in Chicago, IL. Upon his release from the Navy, he worked for D. H. Holmes Co. in New Orleans, LA for eight years. His longest employment was with Louisiana Transit Company in Jefferson Parish, LA for over 30 years, as both a bus driver for over 20 years eventually becoming the company’s safety director. He also represented the bus drivers by serving as president of Local Chapter 1535 of the Amalgamated Transit Union. Upon retirement, he moved back to his hometown of Tickfaw, LA where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and having family gatherings where he showcased his exceptional culinary skills.
Mr. Scardina enjoyed life, being with his family and making people laugh. He will be sadly missed by all who loved him.
The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of the VA as well as North Oaks Hospital and Hospice for their loving care and services.
Visitation for Mr. Scardina will be held on Friday, June 26, 2015 from 9am to 1pm at Leitz-Egan Funeral Homes located at 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd, Metairie, LA. Funeral services will be held in the Leitz-Egan Chapel at 1pm with interment following immediately at St. Patrick’s #3 Cemetery in New Orleans.
