Oscar Mauricio Mendez, age 72, died peacefully on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at his home in Waggaman. A former draftsman and a very talented artist, he was part of the Luling Bridge Building Project, something he and his family were always very proud of.
With a quirky sense of humor, a tender heart and an impressive mind for math, he was always willing to help anyone at any time. A true family man and a devout Christian, he was a member of John Paul II Catholic Church congregation and a former usher at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Waggaman.
Beloved son of the late Guillermo Trinidad Mendez and Marina Estela Martinez Mendez. He was a United States Citizen and a native of El Salvador, where as a teen, he took on big brother responsibilities in helping to care for and raise his younger siblings before the whole family moved to the United States. He has been a resident of Waggaman, LA in Jefferson Parish for the past 47 years. Oscar was a two-time Family Turkey Bowl MVP Quarterback who loved to spread the football around and didn’t discriminate between the offense or defense, which made him a favorite among all team opponents, and as the 24-hour on call family medical advisor, his impromptu calls of advice will be surely missed.
Survivors include his two children, Oscar Mauricio Mendez, Jr (Rachael) and Carolyn Hoover (Steven ); 5 grandchildren: Elise Lester (Ian), Gabriella, Jayse, Helena and Violet; 6 siblings: Jose Guillermo Mendez (Mary), Jose Antonio Mendez (Kathy), Maria Elizabeth Snowden (Marshall), Jose Luis Mendez (Janice), Jose Rolando Mendez (Maria), and Jose Eduardo Mendez (Nicki) as well as over a dozen loving nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the Live Oak Manor Fire Dept, Fire Chief Brian Miller, Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office and EMS first responders for their swift efforts, as well as the staff at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home for their compassionate assistance at this difficult time.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend a Funeral Mass on Friday, May 8, 2026, at 10:30 am at St. John Paul II Catholic Church, 6851 River Road in Waggaman. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am. Entombment will be in Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum at a later date.
