OBITUARY

Paul Richard Shorter

June 5, 1946 – April 22, 2026
Obituary of Paul Richard Shorter
IN THE CARE OF

Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home

Paul Richard Shorter passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at St. Michael’s Assisted Living Home in Metairie. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Joan Ott. They were long-time residents of Metairie where she cared for Paul every single day since his debilitating stroke in 2013.

He was born on June 5, 1946, in Norwich, Connecticut to Helen (Mitnick) and Luther L. Shorter. When Paul was two years old, the Shorters moved to New Orleans. He was preceded in death by his parents and his only brother, Thomas Shorter. He is survived by Joan, sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.

After graduating from McDonough 35 High School in New Orleans, Paul was ordered to active duty in 1967 and served four years in the United States Navy. He served those years in Vietnam and was last assigned to the USS Halsey (DLG-23), a guided missile cruiser. He was awarded a Navy Unit Commendation; a National Defense Service Medal; a Vietnam Service Medal with a Bronze Star; and a Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device.

He worked for many years as a fabricator and installer of window treatments. He retired in 2011 from Consolidated Designer Services, Inc. of Metairie.

After retirement, he went on to enjoy many laughs and fishing trips with Joan, the love of his life. Paul was a man of few words but was quick to laugh----at himself and anything else that tickled his hearty but dry sense of humor.

Interment will be private. Prayers are deeply appreciated.
