

New Orleans band leader, bassist and vocalist, Paul Frederick Walther passed away at his home on June 22, 2022, at the age of 77. Raised in Jefferson Parish, Paul was a beloved part of the New Orleans music scene since childhood. Barely a teenager, he joined his first band, The Roulettes. The talented high school band went on to win the WTIX battle of the bands in 1959. Paul was involved with various band groups throughout his lifelong music career including The Kingsman, Counts, The Emperors, The Corvettes, Super Submarine Marching Band, Old South Dixieland Band, Moe Betta, Good Stuff, The Cowboy Blue Band and Kolour. He is best known as the band leader of the popular New Orleans Band, South which he originally formed in 1971. He reformed the band South in 2013 and continued playing with the band until his death.
Paul is remembered not only as a talented musician, but as a kind and gentle soul, who was always delighted to share his experience and knowledge of the music industry. He was known for his eye for talent and for being a mentor for up-and-coming musicians.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Blessing and Gertrude Walther and his stepdaughter, Melissa Guillen. He is survived by a brother, Phil Walther (Toni); four children, Chris Walther (Lisa), Dana Walther, Jamie Coulon Hebert (Mark) and Jessica Walther and six grandchildren, Christopher Walther Jr., Joshua Walther, Justin Desmare, Stella Warren, CJ Klein and Karrie Klein.
A celebration of Mr. Walther's life will be commemorated at Rock 'n' Bowl, 3016 S. Carrollton Ave. in New Orleans, LA on Saturday, August 13, 2022 from 12:00 noon until 3:00 pm.
