

Petros Demarinis, longtime member of the Greek Orthodox community of New Orleans passed away on Monday Jan. 5, 2015 at age 72. He was preceded in death by his mother Kalliope Zouloufou Karagiannis and sister Xaroula. He is survived by his wife Eleftheria Zoe Mantikos Demarinis, daughters Kalliope (Kelly) Mullins and and Paraskevi (Vivian) Haik, sisters Niki and Despina, brothers Sakelaris, Nikos, George Karagiannis, two grandchildren Michael and Eli Mullins, son in law Mark Mullins and Jeffrey O'Hara. He was born in Rhodes Greece and moved to New Orleans in 1970 where he became a prominent member and tireless volunteer in the Greek Orthodox Holy Trinity Church. Over the past 45 years he has been known for his work as a church Chanter, leading the Church in responses and hymns every Sunday at Holy Trinity. He served as chairman of the Greek Festival for 15 years and was instrumental in helping the festival grow into one of the most beloved festivals in New Orleans. He spent years working at the Royal Sonesta Hotel and East Jefferson General Hospital. At home while raising his family he taught formal Greek School classes for 30 years to anyone interested in learning about Greek culture, history and how to read and write Greek. He was deeply passionate about Greek culture and the Orthodox church. He was a motivated educator and balanced it all perfectly with the art of enjoying life itself. In 2013 Petros was awarded The Archangel Gabriel Award by His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios in Atlanta GA recognizing his service in the Greek community as a “living example of the Orthodox Christian life and journey to Theosis.” “Well done, good and faithful servant: You have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.” - Matthew 25:21. Family and Friends are invited to attend visitation on Friday Jan. 9 from 9am-11am at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 1200 Robert E. Lee Boulevard New Orleans.
