Lin and Bobby,    an old computer science friend of ours thought of Robert a few days ago and googled his name, only to find this.    I am terribly sorry,  hopefully you remember me.   I had not seen Robert in years since I had to leave grad school at UNO and always wished I had stayed in touch with him electronically.   My email address is marcel@marcelmata.com.   I am terribly sorry to hear this,  I has always hoping to catch up with him one day.   I speak for all his computer science colleagues.

Mom just called be a day or so ago and told me the news. Im so very sorry to hear about the loss of Robert. Im sorry that I wasnt able to attend the services and give you our condolences in person. You have always been there to listen and give the greatest advise without judgement and I am so greatful to have you and uncle bobby as a part of my family! I (we) LOVE you all very much and our thoughts and prayers are with you! If there is anything you need please let me know!

The Day After:
Thank you all for your remarkable words.  There is a great comfort for us to know that if we could not be with Robert during the second most audacious period in his life, you were. We have the knowledge of knowing that the others in his life who he considered his friends cared for him until the end.  This has made our echoing silence much easier to endure. Once he had passed, the most important thing for us was to get Robert out of the morgue. This took precedence over everything.  Our greatest concern was the knowledge that he was alone there.  We cremated him very early this morning along with his parting gifts that everyone was able to see and enjoy at his gathering yesterday.  The messages that were written from everyone on his gift bag were laid over the gifts we presented to him along with his games, and his E.T., which we wrapped around his legs the way he did as a child.  The gifts from his grandfather were tucked in close along with his two handkerchiefs from Bobby and I that were like the ones given out to everyone at his last salute.  Oh! And the shop rags were a gag gift from me after he had called to tell me he had gotten the job at Southern Tire Mart. I included them with the handkerchiefs as an after thought. So, Smile. We did not call anyone to ask them to come, but rather allowed only those who felt there was no other place they would rather be.  As a result, only the warmth and true affection, love, and friendship pierced through allowing a gift that all of us who will be moving forward without him here, a lasting peace. The pennies you graciously gave are the greatest tribute you could each have given to him and to us. They represent the unique way he touched each one of you here and allowed us to personify his urn as his, alone. 

Southern Tire Mart, thank you. You are more than an entity, you are an excellence.
Oh! And hey guys! LOL at this his last prank…Grab um and trade um. HA! HA! HA!

Lin, I only heard about your tragedy a few hours ago.  I am so sorry for the pain you and your family are going through. You were so helpful to our family when Elizabeth died. I wish I had known in time to attend your son's service to be there for you too. I can only say,  that if your son is like you, than there are many people who love him and always will.

Robert has been a part of my life for 20 years. He will be missed greatly

I like to believe that when we lose someone close to us they still live through us and gives us strength.  I'm glad to have had Robert in my life.  My deepest sympathy goes out to the Schefferstein family.

Robert, you were not only a dear friend to me, but my brother by choice. I love you and I will miss you greatly. You will always mean the world to Lee and I.

Robert was passionate about so many things in his life. He discovered late in his UNO coursework how much he loved geology. We talked many times about this interest. Shortly before Christmas, he told me that he was trying to decide when to return to school to earn a second degree, this one in geology. Robert was a gentleman, a fine student, and a good friend. I will honor his memory.
