Rodney was a Cajun character who might have greeted Saint Peter at the pearly gates and swiftly joked his way into heaven. However, he did not need to joke to gain entrance. The Lord surely allowed him in with open arms since he was such a generous, loyal, and honest man. He is now in paradise which he so justly deserves.
He was widowed in 1997 when his first wife, the former Evelyn Evans, tragically passed away from cancer. He is survived by his dedicated and loving wife, Kathryn Powell Mouton, his younger brother Francis (Frank/F.E.) Mouton, four children Julie Knecht (Peter), Marcia Snell (Bruce), Paula Conti (Charles), and Marc Mouton (Cabell), ten grandchildren Jennifer Rodriguez Campbell (Brian), Michelle Knecht, Jack Rodriguez, Amy Knecht Rawlins (Jeff), Alyssa Conti, Lisa Knecht Cardinale (Seth), Steven Knecht, Catherine Conti Jacobson (Zachary), Skyler Mouton, and Sarah Mouton, and three great-grandchildren.
Rodney was born in Lafayette, Louisiana on July 4, 1931, to the late Francis E. Mouton and Katherine Hebert Mouton. He graduated from Jesuit High School and Tulane University where he obtained a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. He was a member of the Tau Beta Pi and Omicron Delta Kappa honor societies and was Vice President of the Engineering student body.
Rodney was employed as an Engineer by New Orleans Public Service, Inc. (NOPSI), and subsequently served two years with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Fort Belvoir, VA. Upon discharge, Rodney returned to NOPSI (later LP&L and Entergy), where he worked for 43 years. He retired as a Governmental Affairs Executive in 1996.
He was active in his children’s and grandchildren’s sports events and was proud of their many accomplishments on and off the field. Rodney was active in various engineering circles in Metropolitan New Orleans, including President of the Louisiana Engineering Society, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the American Public Works Association, and a utility representative during hurricanes. He served as a board member for the YMCA, Urban League, Saint James Major High School, and the Usher Society of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.
The family would like to thank Charlotte Neville, Willean Allen, and Jerry Ann Veals for their tender care during his illness. Thank you to the Notre Dame Hospice staff for their support.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Angela Merici Church, 835 Melody Drive, Metairie, LA on Tuesday, February 5th at 11:30 a.m. Visitation at the church from 10:00 a.m.– 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Saint Roch Cemetery #2. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the charity of your choice.
