

Roy Edward “Pops” Hyer Sr. passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday evening, October 22, 2014. He was 89 years old. Beloved husband of Audrey Cline Hyer for over 66 years. Loving father of Roy E. Hyer Jr., Peggy Hyer Mellor (William), Susan Hyer Zimmerman (Gerard), and Wayne J. Hyer. Grandfather of Maureen Hyer Fleischman (Jon), Ryan Zimmerman (Stephanie), Stacie Mellor Collins (Chris), and Matthew Zimmerman. Great-grandfather of Savanna Claire, Kyle Patrick, Matthew Ryan and Sophia Elizabeth. Uncle to many generations of loving and caring nieces and nephews. Brother of the late Mildred Biggs, Floyd Hyer Sr., Emile Hyer Jr., and Maxine Daly. Son of the late Emile Hyer Sr. and Helen Dies Hyer. He was a native of New Orleans, was raised in the Irish Channel, and has resided in Metairie for the past 60 years. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II. While in active duty, he was honored with the WWII Victory Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with a bronze star. He retired from Eagle Asbestos, Local 53, after 30 years of dedicated service. Some of his greatest memories were made at “Pops’ Camp” in Little Woods, which stood as a favorite weekend gathering place for many families for over 18 years. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Memorial Mass at St Christopher Church at 309 Manson Avenue, Metairie, LA on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at 12:00 pm with visitation beginning at 9:00 am.
