Ruel Albert Lewis, Jr. passed away peacefully at home on May 5, 2021 at the age of 87. He was born on August 16, 1933 in Jamaica, New York to Ruel Albert Lewis, Sr. and Eleanor Nina Lewis. He is predeceased by his sisters, Eleanor Olivet and Grace Adler. He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Phyllis Rose Lewis, his children, Ruel A. Lewis, III and Ashley N. Lewis, his brother Stanley Omans and several nieces and nephews. He served his country proudly for 6 years in the United States Army as a Sergeant and member of the 187th Infantry Regiment (Rakkasans), a regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, which led to his serving in the Korean War. He was also a member of the 82nd Airborne stateside. Ruel spent his early years working in construction which brought him to Bradenton, Florida where he helped to complete construction of El Conquistador Country Club golf course becoming its first golf course superintendent. Ruel left the country club for 3 years in the late 1970s to run his own lawn maintenance business with Phyllis, returning to the club in 1980 as the assistant golf course superintendent for many years. He again held the golf course superintendent position in the 1990s until he retired in August 2000. During his 27 years in Florida, he and Phyllis raised their 2 children. Ruel was energetic, caring, and well-respected in his community and is deeply missed by all who knew him. He has enjoyed the last 20 years living in LaPlace, LA with Phyllis. A Memorial Service will be held for Ruel on Friday, May 14, 2021 at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie, Louisiana from 5 – 7 p.m., with a Prayer Service beginning at 7:00 p.m.
