Stanley Corbett Simons, Sr. (“Sandy”), aged 78, passed away peacefully at home after a brief illness on Wednesday, March 3, 2021. Martha Flick Simons, his beloved wife of 55 years, was with him, having been his constant caregiver and full-time nurse at the end.
Sandy was a proud alumnus of Jesuit High School, Loyola University New Orleans, Loyola Dental School, and the University of Alabama Birmingham’s pediatric dentistry residency program; a Captain in the United States Air Force; a loving husband, father, and grandfather; and a caring and skilled pedodontist who practiced for 44 years—making generations of local children who never wanted to leave his care actually love going to the dentist. Sandy was an avid (to say the least) outdoorsman, who enjoyed the friendship of hunting buddies and the thrill of the hunt everywhere from southeast Louisiana, throughout the country, and the world. A lover of games of chance, Sandy had a lucky streak a mile wide and had been known to “pound ‘em” at roulette tables, one-armed bandits, and video poker machines both near and far. Sandy lit up the room wherever he went—he never met a stranger, had a devilish sense of humor, and was quick to crack a joke (often at your expense). His quiet generosity was endless, and he was always willing to help someone in need. Sandy was a faithful Catholic and a lifelong daily Mass-goer who lived for his faith, his family, his friends, and his patients. A Jesuit Blue Jay through and through, Sandy lived life A.M.D.G.—for the greater glory of God—and truly was a man for others. Martha was his secret weapon—his best friend, unwavering support, caretaker, travel companion, dining partner, and the enabler of his hunting and fishing and casino exploits—she made the whole thing work, and Sandy adored her for it.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude “Monk” Simons, Jr. and Jeanne Wetherall Simons, his aunt Dorothy Wetherall, his in-laws Christian Francis Flick and Rita Reider Flick, and his brother, Claude “Mickey” Simons, III. He is survived and will be greatly missed by his wife Martha Flick Simons and children Shannon Simons Wild (Rodney), Stanley Corbett Simons, Jr. (former daughter-in-law Beth), and Christine Simons Fortunato (Jody); his grandchildren Claire Wild, Christian Wild, Caleb Wild, Jacob Simons, Emily Simons, Kate Simons, Gianna Fortunato, Lucia Fortunato, Luke Fortunato, and Joseph Fortunato; his sisters-in-law Kathleen Flick Fouché (James) and Kay Poole, his niece and nephews, as well as extended family, many dear friends, and thousands of loving former patients.
The family would like to extend our deep appreciation to Drs. Kiran Zaveri and Kenneth Smith for their expertise, care, and concern.
A Requiem Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, March 6, 2021, at St. Clement of Rome Church in Metairie, and burial will be private. Donations in Dr. Simons’ honor may be made to Jesuit High School’s Poor Boys Endowed Scholarship or Boys Hope Girls Hope of Greater New Orleans.
