He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Tammy Martin Vanderbrook; children, Melissa V. Beaugh, Stephen Joseph, Jr. (Jessica), and Sean Michael Vanderbrook; grandchildren, Parker Dorothy and Aidan Cyril Vanderbrook; siblings, Bobby (Terri), Kathy, and Larry Vanderbrook; mother-in-law, Lessie Martin; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends whom he considered family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Richard Vanderbrook, Sr.; father-in-law, Bobby Martin; and son-in-law, Toby Beaugh.
A longtime resident of Metairie, Steve attended St. Francis of Assisi School and was a 1976 graduate of Redemptorist High School, where he was on the basketball team and earned the nickname Jitters. He also attended UNO and worked on the river for several years. Steve never met a stranger. He enjoyed coaching his kids’ teams and traveling to watch the LSU Tigers play. Steve was the third sports commentator no one asked for; he read the newspaper every morning and often broke news stories that were reported online 12 hours earlier; and in his mind, he predicted the outcome of most sporting events. He loved his family and friends with his whole heart and cherished his role as Papa, finding immense joy in spending time with his beloved grandchildren, Parker and Aidan, who were the light of his life. Despite numerous health challenges, with the steadfast care and support of Tammy, he never lost hope or the will to live.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Memorial Mass on Monday, June 2, 2025, at 12:00 PM at St. Angela Merici Catholic Church, 835 Melody Dr., Metairie, with visitation beginning at 10:30 AM. Inurnment will follow at Lake Lawn Park and Mausoleum in New Orleans.
