Steven Kenneth Faulkner, Jr. died on Thursday, March 16, 2023. He was 80 years old. Steve graduated from De La Salle High School in 1959 and then spent 3 years at “LSU by the Sea” (as UNO was affectionately known by its students during the University’s early years). He was President of the TKE fraternity while there. After UNO, Steve attended Loyola University School of Law in New Orleans, and after passing the Louisiana State Bar Exam was sworn into the Louisiana State Bar Association as an attorney in 1965 at the age of 23. He practiced law in the New Orleans area including Jefferson and Plaquemines Parishes, and also in the Federal System for over 40 years. In addition to a large and successful law practice, Steve also in the 1980s saw the opportunities in the real estate market and along with his partners, the late Paul Morphy, and the late Bob Simpson, started an also very successful real estate title company, which served the area for over 25 years. They are also credited with renovating their office space in Metairie. The Huki Lau Restaurant was a vacated space in Fat City, and during a time when that area was being revitalized, Steve and his partners, with the help of friend J. L. DiMiceli’s construction company saw an opportunity. That vacated restaurant was turned into usable office space. It was the first such renovation in that area where a building was repurposed in such a way. It had room for 8 lawyers as well as full secretarial staff, a library, and a kitchen. The building is still in use today.
Steve was not all work and no play. He was an avid fisherman and duck hunter all his life. His love for fishing began on a good friend’s charter boat, the late Stanley Coulon’s “Cougar”. The “Cougar Club” as they called themselves fished rigs off the lower coast of Louisiana, and they enjoyed fishing all the rig tournaments in the late 1970s, catching their share of big fish. Steve also was involved in the Chandeleur Ho Fishing Rodeo Association and was chairman of the organization in its final year. Steve continued his love for the sport and expanded his interest in blue water and bill fishing. This time with his friend, the late Walter Forschler, on his boat the “Kiwi”, once again fishing all the major tournaments. When not on the “Kiwi”, Steve could be found on his own boat out of Shell Beach. On a Friday afternoon, with conditions right, Steve would be organizing his crew, then making that call to Kenny down at Frank “Blackie” Campo’s Marina, “Put #39 in the water tomorrow, fill me up with ice, fuel, and live bait!” Just a couple more calls to verify the crew and the beer and they were on their way. At 4 am Saturday morning, the boat would be on the dock ready to go and the lucky crew would shove off, always returning with a boat full of Red Snapper.
Duck hunting also started early for Steve, in the late ’70s early 80’s, with a gang that hunted out of friend Cliff Miller’s camp at Mill Bayou. This was in the Pearl River area and later became part of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Reserve. In the 90s and 2000s, he hunted with the “Kiwi’ crew in the Bayou Biloxi Marsh, an area not hunted by many. Years later, in 2001, Steve would continue his love for the sport when he and his son-in-law purchased a houseboat they kept at Beschel’s Marina in East Point A La Hache, lovingly called the “fishing and hunting barge”. Not only did they duck hunt from there, but they also fished. The best of both worlds. Unfortunately, Hurricane Katrina had other ideas for the houseboat. Though his passion remained, the landscape had unfortunately changed.
In his later years, Steve enjoyed traveling with his wife Linda. He estimated they probably took over 70 trips across the USA and Mexico, including some favorites with friends Bridget and Wayne Mancuso in their Motorhome. He also enjoyed the company over the years of his and Linda’s 8 Samoyed dogs, Cotton, Candy, Taffy, Snickers, Skittles, Truffles, Jolly, and lastly, Chuckles.
Steve is survived by his loving wife, Linda Hebert Faulkner. He is also survived by his devoted children, all from his first wife the late, JoAnn Tassin Faulkner, their spouses, and their children, his 5 grandchildren.
