A native of Metairie, Thomas G. Tobin, left this world for his heavenly home on Wednesday, February 3, 2016, at the age of 54, after a courageous battle with cancer, portraying his ”Failure Is Not An Option” attitude to the very end. Tom loved his work as a civil engineer with the Corps of Engineers, and was an active member of SAME. Tom was a faithful Catholic, and participated in many of the Church activities, including the nine church pilgrimages on Good Friday.
Tom was an avid cyclist and participated in the 150 Mile MS Bike Tour, and introduced and inspired many others to cycling, including his wife. He was known for using cycling as therapy especially during his illness. He was known to have a mean tennis serve. Tom also worked with various school activities with his sons including assistant soccer coach, master craftsman of pinewood derby cars and rain gutter regatta boats, and science project extraordinaire, Green Egg aficionado; he was also a proponent of “Camp Bon Coeur”. Tom was a jack of all trades and was known to fix or solve all problems wherever or whenever they occurred—on vacation, at restaurants, and at home. His expertise will be greatly missed by family, friends, and associates. A loving husband, father, brother and friend was known for his beautiful rendition of Happy Birthday. His comedic flair and charismatic, amiable personality were apparent even to a stranger from the moment one met him. His loving, happy spirit will be sorely missed.
Tom is survived by his wife Karen Tobin, his sons Gregory, Grant, and Garrett, his brother Daniel Tobin and his wife Peggy, his brother-in-law, Allen Hughes, sister –in-law Kimberlee Kingston-Durgin, nieces and nephews, Nicholas, Kimberly, Robert, Jessica, Mallory, Talitha, and Jherik.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, William Tobin, Jr., and Jacqueline Tobin and his beloved sister Denise Hughes.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 6th at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Kenner, LA from 10:00-12:00pm. A funeral Mass will follow.
