Valdor (Val) Fourmaux Bergeron, age 95, of Harahan, La., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 12, 2022. She was born in New Orleans, La. on January 24, 1926 to the late Henry Fourmaux and Coletta Albro Fourmaux and was the sister of the late Henry Frank Fourmaux. She was the beloved wife of the late Dr. Robert Paul Bergeron Jr., DDS. She was the devoted mother of Bobbie Ann Bergeron, Paul Henry Bergeron (Donna), Robert Paul Bergeron III (Cathy), Mary Bergeron Vinet (Bill), Laurie Bergeron Barrois (Chuck) and the late Colette Bergeron Mentz. She was Nana to her grandchildren: Mark Henry Bergeron, Gregory Bergeron (Michelle), Kimberly Bergeron Ayo (Randy), Kristy Bergeron, Chad Mentz (Megan), Jill Mentz Gaunt (Shawn), Brittany Mentz Hull, Robert P. Bergeron IV (Traci), Adam Bankston (Jill), Codi Bergeron Ackal (Jay), Katie Bergeron Colburn (Kevin), Dustin Vinet (Katie), Jesse Vinet (Stephanie), and Colby Barrois, and 22 great-grandchildren.
Val was the most loving, caring and positive role model anyone could ever have. Both her and her brother, Junior, were born and raised by their loving parents, Henry and Coletta, in the Irish Channel. She cherished and nurtured the love she was given in her youth and spread it throughout her entire life. Her faith in God was instilled in her children and lives on. Val was an active parishioner of St. Agnes Parish for 39 years and later became an active parishioner of St. Rita Parish when she moved to Harahan in 1986.
Val met the love of her life in 1944. A handsome dental student attending Loyola School of Dentistry and entering the military. He swept her off her feet and it led to a 32-year marriage and 6 loving children. Late in their marriage there was the welcomed, but unexpected, “late” arrival of her youngest child, Laurie. She was Val's “Angel in Waiting” and helped get Val through the tragic shock of losing her husband in 1976. Unwavering, Val became the matriarch of the family as she cared for her 6 children and her parents. She went from a doting mom and homemaker, to running a budding family real estate business. The family would later tease her about how much the Soule’ Business College, that she attended as a teen, had finally paid off! Her oldest daughter, Bobbie Ann, became her rock, and to the very end, they kissed goodnight every night for 76 years. “Aunt B” continues to inspire and instill the faith in God that she and her mom practiced.
As the grandchildren started coming into her life, she again transformed herself into the best grandmother anyone could ever want. With the natural ability to love, her beautiful smile, and strong faith, she became the Nana that everyone knew and loved. She truly lived up to her personalized license plate: IM NANA. Amazingly, she was always available to help any of her children and grandchildren, and never gave advice without being asked. Amongst her last words were, “I'm so glad to see you and I love you very, very, much”. She always found time for her family and friends, whether staying up all night to finish (or start) sewing elaborate costumes for a dance recital or event, to connecting with her dearest friends for one of the many fun events with the 11th Ward Social Club, Out for Fun Club, or the Click Club. She loved to sing and dance at her Annual 11th Ward Social Club Variety Show and entertained us all with her natural talent. Val was never bashful to sing with family or friends, and was known to jump on the stage and steal the show! She loved pitching in her time with the American Legion Post 267 bingos for many years. She was a vociferous cheerleader for not only her grandchildren, but also for the LSU Tigers and her beloved New Orleans Saints. Val was a beautiful loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to all.
The Bergeron Family would like to thank Anvoi Hospice for their loving care. And also a special thank you to her caregivers who became like family, Deenen Christmas-Perkins, Toya Bradford Elloie, LaChelle Jones, and Katrina Navarre.
"We will miss you very much Nana. The newest red-headed angel in heaven.”
A Funeral Mass will be held at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home on Friday, January 21, 2022 at 1:00 PM. Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery in New Orleans, La.
Contributions in her honor may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association, www.alz.org.
