Agueda Luisa Agundez Ugartemendia, affectionately known to her friends and family as “Guedy,” was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was born in the city of Holguin, province of Oriente, Cuba on January 17th, 1937 to loving parents, Bernardino and Digna Ugartemendia. She was the oldest of three and is survived by her siblings, Juan Jose Ugartemendia and Marta Roses. She was a brilliant student of the arts and humanities and received her doctorate in Spanish literature and philosophy from the University of Villanueva, Habana, Cuba. She married her best friend and love of her life Jose Luis Agundez, a native of Santander, Spain who was known to his friends as “Pepe Luis.”
She lived her life with unwavering grace and perseverance, even when faced with a challenge. With the onset of the Cuban Communist Revolution, her family was able to move to Miami when Juan Jose Ugartemendia braved the crossing from Camarioca, Cuba to Miami at the young age of 15. Agueda arrived in Miami in December 1965 with the historic 2nd freedom flight out of the country. The Agundez family was welcomed in the United States with open arms by Marta and Jesus Roses, her sister’s household.
Her garden and her family were her passions, and she tended to both with incredible pride, care, and affection. With her husband, Jose Luis, she proudly raised two sons, Juan Carlos and Jose Luis Agundez. Like her garden, her family tree never stopped growing, and she proudly supported two wonderful grandsons, Juan Carlos Jr., and Raphael Luis Agundez. After thirty years of working with the University of Miami Medical School, she retired as a respected Laboratory Technician and Histologist. She entered retirement with the same devotion and enthusiasm she demonstrated throughout her life and continued to practice yoga into her 80's. She is remembered as she lived: a loving caregiver, fiercely intelligent, a graceful beauty, and a woman of faith.
We love her deeply and will miss her greatly!
