Amelia Teresa Alonso, 83, of Miami, Florida, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2026. Born on October 25, 1942, in Cuba, she immigrated to the United States via Spain in 1973, bringing with her a deep faith, an extraordinary spirit, and a boundless love for her family.
A devoted educator, Amelia served as an elementary school teacher from 1973 until her retirement in 2011 — nearly four decades of shaping young minds with patience, warmth, and dedication. Her influence extended far beyond the classroom, touching the lives of countless students and families throughout her career.
Amelia was a devout Christian who attended Sunday school weekly, drawing strength and joy from her faith community. She was a woman of quiet elegance and deep conviction, endowed with a gentle disposition and very few words — yet her gestures always spoke volumes. She listened without judgment and gave without measure.
Outside of teaching, Amelia was a gifted poet, an avid gardener — everything flourished under the touch of her hands — and a spectacular cook who could transform even the simplest ingredients into an extraordinary meal. She often spoke of her dream of one day opening her own restaurant. On Sundays, she loved visiting farmers markets after church, and in the evenings, she savored long walks along the beach at sundown. At home, she enjoyed home renovation programs and the occasional telenovela.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Emilio Alonso and Blanca Mendoza; her beloved youngest daughter, Alicia Alonso, who passed away in January 2022; and her cherished first granddaughter, Junelle, who passed away in 2016.
She is survived by her daughters Angelica, Amelie, Ania, and Alena; her grandchildren Mitchell, Brian, Natalie, Daniel, Rebecca, and Karolina; and her siblings Danilo, Mireya, and Emilio.
This world has lost a good soul, and the heavens have gained an angel worthy of the kingdom of God. Amelia's memory will live on in the hearts of all who had the grace of knowing her — in the gardens she tended, the meals she lovingly prepared, the children she taught, and the quiet, steady love she gave to all.
Rest now, Amelia.
The garden is yours. The shore is quiet. The light is warm.
And all of those who went ahead of you are rejoicing to welcome you home.
