ENGLISH
Bernardo Goenaga left his native land of Cuba in 1968 with nothing but a Rolex sewn into his clothing which he was able to purchase in Havana after selling everything he owned. That watch would help him buy the set of tools he would need for his first job working as a car mechanic in Miami, FL. Bernardo would travel not just to Miami, but also to Mexico and Spain, in search of opportunities and finally settled in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1971 with his first wife, Cristina Julia Goenaga, and where his first two daughters, Carmen and Niurka Goenaga, would be born. While in Puerto Rico he established one of the most successful car dealerships in Rio Piedras, ‘Polo Motors’; one of only a handful to survive the oil crisis of the 1970’s. He would eventually move back to Miami, FL in 1977 in search of more opportunities and would evolve into a well-respected real estate investor and developer. In 1990, he met his second wife Reina Torres and together they welcomed daughters, Jackeline and Vanessa Goenaga.
With no formal education, Bernardo Goenaga was known for his natural intellect, keen business vision and ability to effectively and efficiently predict and calculate the risks of any business investment. These innate abilities allowed him to develop a diverse and ever-growing portfolio of financially lucrative businesses.
Bernardo used these financial successes to support the dreams of his four daughters and to help countless individuals throughout the Miami-Dade community. He was a man who was known for his great discipline and tenacity, but also for his kindness and fairness. He was always open to lend a hand to anyone who was willing to put forth the work to achieve their dreams. And through that mentorship, he was instrumental in helping many achieve their goals of success.
Bernardo was very selective of how he expended his energy. He worked arduously to guarantee the success of his businesses and took great pride in what he had been able to accomplish. He was also an avid Miami Marlins fan, analyzing the team, the players and following their achievements almost as closely as those of his businesses. But nothing was more important to him than his family. This is where he felt his time was best spent. His motivation to labor and toil and experience financial security were fueled by his desire to provide for his family in order to ensure that his daughters would not experience the financial hardships that he endured as a child. His commitment to his work, to his family and close friends was admirable. He will be remembered by all for his disciplined yet generous spirit.
Bernardo is survived by his wife Reina and his four daughters, Carmen, Niurka, Jackeline and Vanessa, who reside in South Florida, his siblings, Basilia Goenaga of Naples, FL, and Nina Goenaga and Pablo Goenaga of Havana, Cuba. His extended family, as well as friends who considered him a father, an uncle, or a brother, are too countless to name.
A viewing will be held on Thursday, June 23, 2022, from 6pm-Midnight at Rivero Caballero Little Havana Funeral Home. His entombment will be on June 24, 2022, at 10:00am at Woodland North Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, we are asking that a donation be made to the Miami Dade College Foundation for a scholarship that will be set up in Bernardo’s honor. Please visit mdcfoundation.com/give-now and select “Other” as the designation and add Bernardo Goenaga in the comment section.
