Donald L. Pabst was a son of Buffalo, a wonderful husband, and a collector with a keen eye. Born to the children of German immigrants, Don grew up under the caring eye of his mother, aunt, and grandparents. The outdoors captivated him. He spent summers at Y camp, fishing, and visiting his grandparents in Miami. Later, he joined the United States Merchant Marine and worked on many ships in the Great Lakes.
But it was the weather and opportunity for personal and professional growth that drew Don to Miami, which would become home for most of his life. He joined the construction trade and helped build some of the bridges and buildings in Miami and Miami Beach as the cities grew in the 1970s and 1980s. He was a proud union member. Don was also an avid coin, gun, and beer mugs collector. His thoughtful collection reflected a lifelong commitment to detail and quality.
Don’s life changed when he met, and eventually married Ana Cecilia Uricoechea, in a union that lasted over 40 years. They were opposites in some ways. She, a Colombian immigrant, proper in her ways and speaking limited English; he, a brash man who barely spoke Spanish. But their marriage thrived because they had mutual respect and love for one another, loved good food, wine, and travel, and shared a strong work ethic. Together, they opened and ran Surfside Barbershop on Miami Beach, successful first time business owners. Don and Ana also traveled extensively in the Americas and Europe, both on land and by sea. Their zest for life and each other enriched Don’s life and created many happy memories for themselves and their family.
Don’s devotion to Ana, his generosity, and his salty sense of humor will be remembered by all. Lift a pint up for the boy from Buffalo who did well!
