It is with profound sadness that we announce that Edith Mercedes Somohano, born September 24th, 1932, passed away on March 20th, 2022 in Miami, Florida just six months shy of her 90th birthday. She died peacefully after giving in to a debilitating fight with Alzheimers.
The youngest of four children, Edith was born in Holguin, Cuba to parents Ramona and Arturo Zaldivar and in 1959 married Benny Vladimir Somohano. Together they raised two sons, Edward and James.
Edith became a very accomplished and articulate translator in the Court of Miami-Dade and later made a career supporting a large law enforcement agency where she forged a path for her youngest son’s career.
Edith was a strikingly beautiful woman who was incredibly expressive, eloquent and generous with the world. She personified the meaning of grace. Devoted to providing for her family and at times having three jobs, she somehow still found ways to help others who had less than she, often hearing of a stranger in need and sending them money in the mail.
Edith took an interest in caring for every person she met and had a unique way of bonding with them through her goodwill, cheer, sincerity and wisdom. She was a devoted wife and mother and sacrificed everything she had in her life for her family.
Growing up with humble means she dreamed of learning music but had to learn to play the piano by ear and without any formal training whatsoever in her life she would later become a beautiful singer, songwriter, music composer and performer. Edith was a prolific writer and poet, much of her expression being dedicated to writing to her children and grandchildren, relentlessly teaching them how to be good human beings.
Edith’s compassion and devotion as a mother manifested itself in the incredible and unselfish love she had for her eldest son Edward, an amazingly talented young man who in his youth became a hockey player, motocross racer and later an extraordinary Chef at the finest venues in Miami. Edward’s untimely death preceded Edith’s and this profoundly affected her life.
Edith is survived by her son James and grandchildren Chelsey, Emily and Steven. Her life will be memorialized and celebrated on Sunday April 3rd, 2022, the tenth anniversary of the loss of her son. She will be laid to rest together with him the following day.
