January 12, 1950 - June 18, 2021
Emilio was born in La Vibora, Habana, Cuba, the second of five sons of Alfredo Gonzalez-Cuzan and Blanca Teresa Fernandez. He lived in Cuba until April 11, 1961 when, at age 11, his family emigrated to Veracruz, Mexico via a Spanish commercial cargo ship – El Covadonga. Eventually they settled in Miami where Emilio pursued his dream of becoming an Architect at the University of Miami and received his license in 1986. He often spoke of this time as a particular source of pride because he had studied after suffering the loss of vision in his left eye, while his two oldest children were very young and his third child was on the way.
Emilio was a passionate man that loved fiercely and had strong convictions. He was an artistic man - a talented painter that enjoyed good wine, wrote memoirs, and marveled at traveling to his ancestor’s birthplaces, where he researched and connected with his family history. Emilio was also a math genius, a chess master, and so much more. In 1998 he married Mayra and lived out the rest of his life by her side. traveled to his ancestor’s birthplaces She was the perfect companion for him and brought him peace and fulfillment. In their time together they welcomed many grandchildren, traveled extensively, danced, admired sunsets, and had picnics in their apartment on Friday nights.
Emilio is survived by his wife Mayra, his sons Cesar and Victor, his daughter and son-in-law Monica and Alex, his grandchildren Mason, Eric and Lauren, and many other family members and friends.
After his death it was discovered that Emilio had recently written of his soul returning to La Habana. In particular, he wrote about his connection to a verse in the song, "Esquina Habanera" that says "No importa lo que suceda y aunque en Miami me muera, mi alma se ira volando para una esquina Habanera". We would like to believe that is exactly where he is.
