Fidelina Varona (Ayerbe) was born in el pueblo de Consolación del Sur, Cuba in the province of Pinar del Rio to Miguel Ayerbe and Lucila Gazquez. She was 1 of 11 children, of which only 9 lived to adulthood. She was the third youngest and the only one to go to school beyond high school, securing a masters degree in education from the University of la habana, only to do it all again in a foreign country and different language once exiled with her husband, two young children, father in law and sister in law in 1968.
She was a woman of great faith and fearless optimism in spite of suffering great losses. She taught for 30 years in Miami-Dade Public Schools as an ESOL teacher in the primary grades in public schools such as Frank C. Martin, Homestead Elementary, Air Base Elementary and finally in Naranja Elementary until retiring in the late 90s. She continued to work as a substitute teacher until her beloved husband Javier's passing in 2003, at which point she fully dedicated herself to enjoying her family and grandchildren, She is survived by four grandchildren, Frankie and Alicia Varona; Juan Antonio and Máximo Granados who were her pride and joy, and two loving children, Francisco Javier and Luisa Maria, and daughter in-law, Maria Lourdes “Luly” Varona, who couldn't be prouder to call her Mami, Mima, and Aba.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 7, 2024 from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM at Caballero Rivero Westchester, 8200 SW 40 Street, Miami, Florida 33155.
The family requests the honor of your presence at the funeral mass to celebrate the life of Fidelina A. Varona on Monday, April 8, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 11291 SW 142 Avenue, Miami, FL 33186.
Following the mass, the graveside service will occur at Flagler Memorial Park, 5301 West Flagler St, Miami, FL 33134.
