Glenn Marion Shumway, aged 75, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at his home in Miami, Florida.
Born on October 29th, 1949, in Coldwater, Michigan, Glenn lived a life marked by public service and love for Jesus, family, and country. In 1967, he was drafted into the Vietnam War, where he demonstrated great courage and commitment as a pacifist paramedic in the 1st Airmobile Cavalry Division in the U.S. Army. While he refused to carry a weapon due to his religious convictions, his bravery in his numerous medivac missions earned him several military merit awards for his heroic service—including the distinguished Silver Star Medal.
Following his 10 years of military service, Glenn continued to serve his community with distinction as a paramedic firefighter for the Miami Beach Fire Department for 14 years (1982-1996). Brave, compassionate, and steadfast, he was the kind of man who ran toward danger to protect others, leaving a lasting legacy in the lives he saved and the colleagues he inspired. In his free time, he also enjoyed trail running, bird watching, nature walks, and road trips with his family.
Glenn is survived by his beloved wife, Joan Shumway; his daughter, Rebecca Shumway; his stepson, Jason Foley; his grandson, Enzo Castillo; his sisters, Contance Bussey, Jennifer Odom, and Angela Beach; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his former wife, Ana Shumway, who is the mother of his late daughter, Annette Shumway. He is preceded in death by his parents, Glenn Shumway Sr. and Anna Shumway; his daughter, Annette Shumway; his stepson, Daemon Foley; and his brother, Elwin Shumway.
He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a steady presence in the lives of those who knew and loved him. His sense of humor, generous spirit, and unwavering strength touched everyone fortunate enough to call him family or friend. He will be dearly missed and forever remembered by his family, friends, and the community he served so selflessly.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, July 27th, 2025, from 2-6 P.M. at Caballero Rivero Woodlawn South. Military honors will begin promptly at 5 P.M.
