Graciela A. Ruiz

Graciela A. Ruiz nació el 20 de marzo de 1932 en la Habana, Cuba y entregó su alma al Señor el 4 de enero del 2025 en Miami, Florida a la edad de 92 años. La causa de su fallecimiento fue una falla respiratoria. Mi mamá trabajó como maestra toda su vida, después de graduarse con un Doctorado en Pedagogía de la Universidad de La Habana. Por un total de 50 años ejerció como maestra, 15 años en Cuba y 35 años en Estados Unidos de América. Siempre rodeada de niños, enseñándoles y forjándose para ser mujeres y hombres de bien.

El sentido del humor de mi mama, inconfundible y refrescante. Debido a nuestros años en la Cuba comunista, desarrolló una sagacidad y agilidad mental impresionante para librarse de ese oprobioso sistema. En 1972 partimos el núcleo familiar, mamá, papá y yo hacia España, aunque mi papá, Jack Retamar, ya se había divorciado de mi madre. En 1973 partimos a México a casa de familiares donde fuimos bien recibidos y amados. En 1974 partimos para Miami, Florida, Estados Unidos de América. Ya en este gran país, mi mama tuvo varios trabajos, limpieza de oficinas, venta de enciclopedias, clases particulares y finalmente trabajó como maestra de niños de Kindergarten en el Centro Mater de la Arquidiócesis de Miami. Después de retirada residió por 10 años en St. Dominic Gardens también de la Arquidiócesis de Miami. Debido a su edad tuvo que ir a residir a un hogar de ancianos donde fue tratada con respeto y amor. Los últimos 4 años de su vida hasta su partida con el Señor residió en el Kendall Lakes Rehabilitation and Health Center, lugar maravilloso con personal humano y amoroso aparte de unas facilidades óptimas donde fue muy bien cuidada y tratada con mucho amor. En el 2023 es electa Reina del mes de la Hispanidad, cosa que la emocionó y alegró mucho. Frases de mi mamá: “tú eres tú y yo soy yo, pero respeto tu opinión”, “el amor lo puede todo” y se sabía todos los versos sencillos de Jose Martí, Apóstol de Cuba.

Mi madre, Graciela Alejandra Ruiz, González de las Peñas y Ladrón de Guevara era y es, porque ahora mora en la presencia del Señor una mujer, maravillosa, bondadosa e inteligente que Dios nos regaló a Alex Retamar, hijo, Irma I. Retamar, nuera, Paola M. Retamar, nieta, Alexander Retamar, nieto y mi papá Jack Retamar, su familia extendida, amistades y personas que la conocieron.

La velación de Graciela se llevará a cabo el viernes 10 de enero de 2025 de 5:00 pm a 12:00 am en Caballero Rivero Little Havana, 3344 SW 8th Street, Miami, FL 33135. El entierro en el mausoleo será el sábado 11 de enero de 2025 a las 10:30 am en Memorial Plan Flagler Memorial Park, 5301 West Flagler Street, Miami, FL 33134.

Graciela A. Ruiz was born on March 20th, 1932, in Havana, Cuba and gave her soul to the Lord on January 4th, 2025 in Miami, Florida at the age of 92 years old. The cause of her passing was respiratory failure. My mother worked as a teacher all her life, after graduating from Havana University with a Doctorate in Pedagogy. For a total of 50 years she worked as a teacher, 15 years in Cuba and 35 years in the United States. Always surrounded by children, teaching them and forging them to be better women and men.

My mother’s sense of humor was unique and refreshing. Due to our years living in Communist Cuba, she developed a wit and quickness of mind to extricate herself from that horrible system. In 1972 we left as the nuclear family to Spain, even though my father, Jack Retamar, was already divorced from my mother. In 1973 My mother and I left for Mexico to relatives’ home where we were well received and treated with love. In 1974 we left for Miami, Florida, USA. In this great country of ours my mother had various jobs, cleaning office buildings, selling encyclopedias, private classes for children and finally she worked as a teacher of Kindergarten at the Centro Mater of the Archdiocese of Miami. After retiring she resided for 10 years at St. Dominic Gardens, also part of the Archdiocese of Miami. Due to her age and health she had to reside in an Adult Congregate Living Facility, where she was treated with love and respect. The last 4 years of her life until her passing to the Lord’s arms, she resided at the Kendall Lakes Rehabilitation and Health Center, a marvelous facility with humane and loving personnel and optimum premises, where she was treated with love and respect. In 2023 she was elected Queen of the Hispanic Month, which filled her with emotion and made her extremely happy. My mother’s phrases: “you are you and I am me, but I respect your opinion”, “love can conquer all”, and she knew all the simple verses of Jose Marti, the Apostle of Cuba.

My mother, Graciela Alejandra Ruiz y Gonzalez de las Penas, was and is, because know she resides in the presence of the Lord, a marvelous woman, kind and intelligent that God gave as a gift to Alex Retamar, son, Irma I. Retamar, daughter-in-law, Paola M. Retamar, granddaughter, Alexander Retamar, grandson, my father, Jack Retamar, all extended family, friends and people who knew her.

A visitation for Graciela will be held Friday, January 10, 2025 from 5:00 pm to 12:00 am at Caballero Rivero Little Havana, 3344 SW 8th Street, Miami, FL 33135. An entombment will occur Saturday, January 11, 2025 at 10:30 am at Memorial Plan Flagler Memorial Park, 5301 West Flagler Street, Miami, FL 33134.
