Hidelcira Matias

Hidelcira Matias, 90, was called peacefully to her Heavenly home on September 2, 2022, surrounded by her daughters and grandchildren. “Cira” and “Tata” as she was affectionately known to family and friends, was born on January 18, 1932, in Jagüey Grande, Matanzas, Cuba, to Rogelio Martinez y Socorro and Maria Lopez y Socorro. She was the second oldest of five daughters who lived and worked in Havana as a fashion model until she moved to Miami, Florida in 1955 to pursue an acting and modeling career. As an up-and-coming model and dancer, she became a staple in Miami’s and Miami Beach’s glamorous fashion shows and music venues of the mid to late 1950s and early 1960s.

While on tour in New York, she met a handsome, young man who was originally from Guanabacoa, Cuba. Cira and Martin Matias would eventually marry, live in New York for several years until ultimately settling down in Miami with their two daughters. While they would go their separate ways and divorce years later, Cira and Martin lovingly reunited years ago much to the delight of their daughters and grandchildren.

Retiring from her modeling career, Cira became a devoted wife, mother and servant leader in her community and church. She was passionate about her Catholic faith and was a loyal parishioner and worshiped at Gesu Catholic School where her daughters graduated, and she founded a successful transportation company. Later, she would worship, actively volunteer, organize and champion fundraisers until her last days at St. Kieran Catholic Church.

Her greatest loves and joy were her daughters and grandchildren. She could often be found entertaining her family, neighbors, close friends and church family with her famous Cuban delicacies and joy of life. She was passionate about cooking and loved to spoil her guests by serving their favorites even if it meant preparing multiple main courses.

She spent considerable time gardening and cultivating her popular pineapple, sugarcane and avocado, bitter orange and “fruta bomba” trees. She delighted in growing and proudly sharing them with neighbors, family, and friends. She was also often found doting on her colorful love birds who usually were heard singing to her or alongside her.

Cira, an experienced traveler, cherished her adventures throughout US, Europe, the Middle East, the Caribbean and South America with family and friends. Her home was beautifully adorned with photographs and relics that told countless stories of her travels and fun escapades.

Her engaging personality, sense of humor and antics were legendary among her close friends and family, and those who knew her have their own, fun stories to tell. She had an abundance of healthy energy that radiated with an aura of positivity, humility, and love when she entered a room. She delighted in helping friends and was fiercely loyal to a close group of friends and church family until her last days. She had an unyielding enjoyment for life coupled with a no-nonsense, determined personality who would give the shirt off her back to all in need. She was well-known for her selfless, charity to the sick and others, and would help them find medical treatment, jobs, homes, and resources to get them back on their feet. This included her extended family in Cuba whom she was loyal and devoted to until her last days.

Cira is survived by her daughters, Margarita “Maggie” “Katina” Lourdez Tawil, of Miami, and Maria Leggett (James) of Memphis, Tennessee, and five grandchildren, Obeid “Obi” Tawil of Miami, and Alina “Nina” Sanders (Jonathan) of Pembroke Pines, Florida, Ethan Leggett of Gainesville, Florida, William “Liam” Leggett of Clemson, South Carolina and Isabella “Bella” Leggett of Annapolis, Maryland.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, September 8, 2022, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Caballero Rivero Little Havana, 3344 S.W. 8 Street, Miami, Florida 33135. At 12:30 p.m., Friday, September 9, 2022, a mass in her memory will be held at St. Kieran Catholic Church, 3605 South Miami Avenue, Coconut Grove, Florida 33133 followed by a gravesite service at 2:00 p.m. at Memorial Plan Flagler, 5301 W. Flagler Street, Miami, Florida 33134.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial gifts be made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, or to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Cira’s Heavenly homecoming reunited her with her mother, father, and sisters. Our Tata and Mami (as her daughters called her) is beautiful again and nothing hurts.

Hidelcira Matías, de 90 años, fue llamada pacíficamente a su hogar Celestial el 2 de septiembre de 2022, rodeada de sus hijas y nietos. “Cira” y “Tata” como cariñosamente la conocía su familia y amigos, nació el 18 de enero de 1932 en Jagüey Grande, Matanzas, Cuba, de Rogelio Martínez y Socorro y María López y Socorro. Sus mayores amores y alegrías fueron sus hijas y nietos. A menudo, entretenía a su familia, vecinos, amigos cercanos y la familia de la iglesia con sus famosas delicias Cubanas y alegría de vivir. Su personalidad cautivadora, su sentido del humor y sus travesuras eran legendarios entre sus amigos cercanos y su familia, y aquellos que la conocieron tienen sus propias historias divertidas que contar. Tenía una abundancia de energía saludable que irradiaba con un aura de positividad, humildad y amor cuando entraba en una habitación. Le encantaba ayudar a sus amistadas y fue ferozmente leal a un grupo cercano de amigos y familia de la iglesia hasta sus últimos días. Tenía un espíritu inquebrantable por la vida junto con una personalidad decidida y sensata que daría la camisa que llevaba puesta a todos los necesitados. Era conocida por su caridad con los enfermos y otras personas, y los ayudaba a encontrar tratamiento médico, trabajos, hogares y recursos para recuperarse. El velorio se llevará a cabo el jueves 8 de septiembre de 2022, de 4:00 p.m. a 8:00 p.m. en Caballero Rivero Little Havana, 3344 S.W. 8 Street, Miami, Florida 33135. El viernes 9 de septiembre de 2022 a las 12:30 p.m. se celebra una misa en su memoria en Iglesia Católica St. Kieran, 3605 South Miami Avenue, Coconut Grove, Florida 33133 seguido por el entierro a las 2:00 pm en Memorial Plan Flagler, 5301 W. Flagler, Miami, Florida 33134.
