Irene R. Lopez

Irene R. López (nee Cabrera) died Sunday, March 16, in Miami Beach, at age 93, ending an inspiring journey that began on May 5, 1931. She was one of only two siblings to survive past early childhood from among seven born in the Havana suburb of Santiago de las Vegas to her mother, Julia del Carmen Cabrera Rodriguez and father, Hilario Cabrera — an early testament to the strength and determination that would guide her the rest of her life. That resilience would serve as an example to her three children: Myriam Márquez (Tony Pipitone) of Miami Beach; Alberto Márquez (Traci Fuller) of Senoia, GA; and Maria López Tower (Alex Tower) of Kendall. Those traits, along with her grace, charm, elegance and beauty (inside and out), were captivating — no more so than when they were shone on the love of her life, husband Manuel Catalino López, with whom she shared 40 years, until his passing in 2008.

After arriving in Miami shortly after Cuba's communist revolution, Irene devoted herself to providing for her children and extended family, who she helped settle from Cuba to the United States in successive waves, from the Freedom Flights to the Mariel boatlift. Having graduated as a teacher in home economics in Cuba, she put those skills to work in the 1960s and quickly rose to supervise seamstresses at Lovely Products, a scarfs and hats factory in Hialeah.

She later started her own home decorating business in the 1970s and also trained to be a pharmacy technician, working until her retirement at Pan American Hospital. A talented saleswoman, she also enjoyed selling Mary Kay beauty products and was proud to have qualified for a company car. In addition to her three children, Irene is survived by five grandchildren (and spouses) — Joseph Pipitone (Jordan Shafer), Michael Pipitone (Shara), Jace Márquez (Morgan), Heidi Márquez and Isabella Tower — along with four great-grandchildren: Hunter and Zoey Pipitone and Murray and Molly Márquez.

A viewing is scheduled for Friday, March 21, 2025, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and burial on Saturday, March 22, at 10 a.m., at Caballero Rivero Woodlawn South & Woodlawn Park Cemetery South at 11655 SW 117 Ave., Miami. Fue una de los dos únicos hermanos que sobrevivieron la primera infancia de entre siete nacidos en el suburbio habanero de Santiago de las Vegas, de su madre, Julia del Carmen Cabrera Rodríguez y su padre, Hilario Cabrera, un testimonio temprano de la fuerza y determinación que la guiarían el resto de su vida. Esa resiliencia serviría de ejemplo para sus tres hijos: Myriam Márquez (Tony Pipitone) de Miami Beach; Alberto Márquez (Traci Fuller) de Senoia, GA; y María López Tower (Alex Tower) de Kendall.

Esos rasgos, junto con su gracia, encanto, elegancia y belleza (por dentro y por fuera), eran cautivadores, no más que cuando brillaban sobre el amor de su vida, su esposo Manuel Catalino López, con quien compartió 40 años, hasta su fallecimiento en 2008.

Después de llegar a Miami poco después de la revolución comunista de Cuba, Irene se dedicó a mantener a sus hijos y a su familia extendida, a quienes ayudó a establecerse de Cuba a los Estados Unidos en oleadas sucesivas, desde los Vuelos de la Libertad hasta el puente del Mariel. Habiéndose graduado como maestra en economía doméstica en Cuba, puso esas habilidades a trabajar en la década de 1960 y rápidamente ascendió para supervisar a las costureras en Lovely Products, una fábrica de sombreros en Hialeah.

Años después, comenzó su propio negocio de decoración del hogar en la década de 1970 y también se capacitó para ser técnica en farmacia, trabajando hasta su jubilación en el Hospital Panamerican en Miami. Una talentosa vendedora, también disfrutaba vendiendo productos de belleza Mary Kay y estaba orgullosa de haber calificado para un auto de la empresa.

Además de sus tres hijos, a Irene le sobreviven cinco nietos y sus cónyuges: Joseph Pipitone (Jordan Shafer), Michael Pipitone (Shara), Jace Márquez (Morgan), Heidi Márquez y Isabella Tower — junto con cuatro bisnietos, Hunter y Zoey Pipitone, y Murray y Molly Márquez.

El velatorio está programado para el viernes 21 de marzo de 2025, de 5 p.m. a 9 p.m., y el entierro para el sábado 22 de marzo a las 10 a.m. en Caballero Rivero Woodlawn South & Woodlawn Park Cemetery South en 11655 SW 117 Ave., Miami.
