My Dear Friend Basil,

Jennifer and I are so terribly distraught to have just learned of the recent passing of our dear friend, and your beloved bride of so many years … Jean. Our daughters Indira and Sabrina join us in extending heartfelt condolences to you, Kwame, Diallo, Sandra, Carol, Marchelle, Elka, Keisha, and the rest of the Bryan extended family.

Words simply cannot express our sorrows at hearing this unexpected news of the passing of Indira’s (our firstborn) godmother. Although our two families have not been together for several years, 1974 in Washington DC will always be remembered for the fond memories which followed our first meeting at your home in Maryland.

Jean, especially, will always be remembered for her very compelling demeanor as a very pleasant, humorous, and fun-loving person who so much loved her family. Jennifer and I are grateful, humbled, and, so fortunate to have known Jean and, indeed, the entire Bryan family unit.

May her soul rest in peace!

Basil, Kwame, Diallo, Sandra, Carol and extended family:
Jean was a "sister" to me. When she came to work as a fellow Counselor in the Educational Advisory Center of the College of Liberal Arts, at Howard University we were immediately compatible. Our friendship soon outgrew our professional relationship. My late husband, "the Colonel," loved her cooking. So often when she came to work, she would hand me a little package and say "This is for John." Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.
Love,
Joyce Squire

To The Bryan Family

Out heartfelt sympathy on the home going of Sister Jean. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
I had the privilege of being named after her “Jean Marie “ - it has been many years since we last spoke but it’s just unbelievable that the very week she passed on she came to mind along with her sisters and I wondered if she had made the move from Maryland to Florida. Then my cousin came across the announcement on Facebook.
Our love to her husband and family also Sister San and Sister Carol.
My name is Jean Marie but everyone knows me as Sandra - Ms. Tiny’s daughter.
Regards from Peaches and Rickey also.

My sincere condolences to Basil, Sandra and all the family for the loss of your dear wife, sister, mother and grandmother.
We met at Camperdown High. Our lives went into different directions.
After many years and she relocated to Florida, our mutual friend Jackie Lucie-Smith encouraged me to reach out to Jean.
So glad I did, we spoke on a few occasions, wonderful conversations and got caught up with life, she was enjoying grand-parenthood, despite distances. So happy she had that joy.
Glad I had those moments. May her soul R.I.P
Marie Carty

Jean could not have been a more true and loyal friend to our family. We will miss her dearly. May God comfort Basil and their families in this time of bereavement.
Love and Blessings.

Our heart felt condolences to Basil, Kwame, Diallo, Sandra, Carol and their families for the untimely passing of a truly wonderful wife, mother, sister, friend and servant of Our Almighty God. I have had the good fortune to have enjoyed Jean's warmth, affection, kindness, guidance and support for the past fifty six years. Sonia, my wife, and I consider Jean and Basil not only close neighbors (living only three miles apart) but Family. We did a lot together and shared many happy memories. These memories we will treasure until we are called home.

Bas, we share the pain of your loss. Sonia and I will do our best to provide any comfort you need. Rest assured that Jean is in heaven looking out for us.

Peace and love!

You and your sisters were a few of the students l knew when l first went to Camperdown. You have always been welcoming to me and although we did not share any classes l could always depend on you for guidance. As a head girl you were always there to offer assistance .l can remember the needlework teacher using
a garment that you made as an example for us to follow. As long as l live l cannot forget you and Hermine Taylor leaving the school grounds to let my Aunt know that although my name was left out of the Gleaner as one of the students that was successful in the Sr.Cambridge Exam ,it was an error .l was successful.l happened to be with my Aunt that day (being ashamed to attend school ) I remembered how happy l was to get the good news. Thanks again ladies for realizing that you could "add some joy" to my day. Jean will be greatly missed as a wife, mother, sister ,mother in law, grand mother and to the extended family please accept my condolences.May she R.I.P.

My dear Jeanie words cannot express how much I was blessed to have a friend like you for over 50 years. Your quiet faith was an inspiration. Now you are with our Lord and Savior the one who attended your every thought and action. Her many acts of kindness small and large will serve to honor her life here on earth. We miss you Jeanie but you are home now and I know that you will be smiling in heaven. May God give you eternal rest. Love always and forever your friend...…..Jilly

It is with utmost sadness that I grieve with the Bryan family for the devastating loss of Jean.

I had worked with Dr. Basil Bryan for many years in the Jamaican Embassy in Washington, D.C. and throughout those years had gotten to know the family quite well.

My lasting memory of Jean and I believe the last time that I saw her was when she traveled to Tokyo Japan in 1997 and stayed with me at my apartment during the visit (at the time I was working for the Jamaican Embassy in Tokyo, Japan). This tour of duty was made possible by Dr. Bryan.

After returning to the United States, we were in communication up until a couple of years ago and then I lost touch with him and Jean.

Jean was such a beautiful soul who was very infectious with her strong personality, independence, kindness and tremendous love for her family and friends.

Gone but not forgotten and even though we had not communicated for a long time ..... I will certainly miss you.

As head girl at CHS Jean was well liked and respected. I remember her encouraging me to go out for track and field even though she knew I was never going to be good. Her encouragement was good enough for me.

I am deeply saddened by Jean’s passing. She was my walking partner for many, many years and even though she moved to Florida ending our early morning routine, we continued to keep in touch, compare notes and encourage each other in our fitness journey. She even wanted me to move to Florida so we could continue our shenanigans after retirement. I can never forget Jean, whenever I walk or go by our favorite track/walking route I think of her with the fondest memories. Her discipline with our walks was amazing! Good weather or not, even in the snow we made it out. We motivated each other and I will always be grateful to her for that partnership. Walk good Jean! Love always! 🙏🏽❤️

We met Jean in 1966 through a mutual friend Mickey. Over the years we developed a great friendship. She Loved me with all of my weaknesses and faults. We will miss you our dear friend and you will always remain in our hearts. Sleep well our friend until we will meet again. Remember our promise, we have a date on that beautiful shore near the tree of life. We are looking forward to that day when we will be together again. To all of the family, she will be missed greatly but never forgotten. Be of good cheer, joy will come in the morning. My sweet Jeanie, We will miss you. xoxoxo
Martin & Alethia Charles

I knew Jean and her sisters Sandra, Carol and Pinny from i was a small child. I have very fund memories of them and their beloved mother Mrs. Estella Pinnock AKA " Miss P " making much of me and doting over me. I remember Jean along with his sisters as being high school girls as well as when Sandra got married and then Jean shortly after got married too. I remember her beloved husband Basil come to the home to visit from time to time and like Jean and her sisters he was also a student at Camperdown high school at that time. Jean like her other sisters Sandra and Carol were always motivators and all 3 sisters loved the Lord Jesus Christ and served him. Jean's smile could always light up any room and she had a humble, caring and giving heart. All 3 sisters motivated me as i grew up but Jean stands out the most in my mind because of her calming spirit just like her mother Ms. P. RIP Jean until we meat again and to the family i say be of good courage and you remain in my thoughts and prayers.

We met Jean and her beloved Basil on our trip to Israel a year ago. She connected with us instantly on the 13 hr airplane ride to Tel Aviv, and she was a really great travel companion. She was warm, kind, thoughtful, smart, funny. We were so sad to hear about her passing. Our sincere condolences to Basil, her sons and family. R.I.P. Jean

Auntie Jean you will be greatly missed by all who knew you. My first memory of you was coming to this country in 1979 and meeting you for the first time at my sister Alethia Charles. You were so kind and invited me to your house to get to know your Neice. Over the years you were a constant at family functions. We rekindled when you moved to Florida. It was indeed a pleasure visiting You in Boynton Beach. You were such a great host! Warm, loving and kind Couldn’t begin to describe you! Uncle Basil and family please accept our deepest condolences. Aunty Jean May your soul rest in eternal peace. So long, farewell until we meet again.

Thank you for having helped to make a difference in my life, as well as the many students at Howard University.
I would like to leave a verse from a poem that I feel is appropriate.
To the living, I am gone
To the sorrowful, I will never return,
To the angry, I was cheated
But to the happy. I am at peace
And to the faithful, I never left.
Jean will always be with us.

Our condolences to the Bryan Family. We are thinking of you all in this tough time.

I have great memories of time spent at the Bryan home in Maryland because of how welcoming Ms. Bryan made us feel!

I will always remember you and Basil at Camperdown High School, especially on the track. Jean, May your soul Rest in Peace. You will always be remembered. Blessings and prayers for the family.

Lots of warm and sweet memories of Auntie Jeannie! My warmest condolences to the entire family. PS I loved her gorgeous and colorful dresses always reflected her magnetic and bright personality.

Best roommate ever over 50 years ago in Howard's Baldwin Hall! Serving as an undergraduate resident assistant in the dorm was where Jean began her journey as an outstanding role model and trusted counselor to Howard students. Sincerest condolences to Basil, Kwame, Diallo and the family.

Today we memorialize the life of Jean Bryan. A dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, sister friend, who will be sorely missed. Thank you for loving us and touching so many lives.

My favorite memory of her is her infectious smile. She was a truly fabulous lady. My condolences to Dr. Bryan and the rest of the family.

I appreciate the warm, welcoming spirit that Jean had for our family as we came to participate in Kwame and Katie's wedding. Jean made sure my my son Max had care during that special wedding week. He was one at the time. He is now 16, and there was no limit to the kind words Jean offered in support of Max on FB regarding his accomplishments. I also will remember that Jean set me at ease when I had to speak at Katie and Kwame's reception. She was a kind and encouraging person to speak with. Jean has been a wonderful friend to my parents Bill and Patsie. We enjoyed seeing the pictures of the places they traveled together. We enjoyed seeing the family when they visited NC. Our hearts are heavy for your loss, but we have been touched by the amazing and loving words during the service about this very special woman. Take care and we offer big hugs to Kwame, Katie, Dr. Bryan and all family and friends.

Jean my sweet Jean, I miss you with all of my heart. No more Will we have our long chats.Rest in the arms of sweet Jesus..I know your mom, my dear sis is welcoming her Jeanie home.Bas, Kwame,Diallo and family,I love you.
Bloss and Damien

My beautiful Jean with her beautiful smile and her encouraging words.
I remembered up to this day that my father never wanted me to do education at Howard. But she encouraged me to do what I liked and I will never forget her encouraging me to be a teacher.
She would tell me as she looked through her window she would see me outside the department of Human Ecology and I had an awesome way with kids.Thank you for all your encouragement.
She was a working Mom but kept her home Immaculate, was there for her boys and husband and kept up with her husband's busy schedule. An awesome mother, wife and friend to all.
So happy that my family in Washington D.C were your family too.
Hence I met you, Basil and your sons and was a part of your journey. We will truly miss you and heaven has the most beautiful angel.

Dear Basil - we are one family. We live together, we love together and when one of passes, we grieve together. The Bryan family is large .... large - because both you and Jean have taken many under your wings.

We celebrate Jean's life and will continue to be with you as family.

One Love.

Though I did not know Jean well, only having met her on a few occasions in Washington, DC, I was struck by the strength of the bond that she shared with BK, one nurtured over the course of their several decades together.
I convey my deepest condolences to BK, their sons and all members of their family during this moment - of grief; reflection on a life well lived; and thankfulness that she rests in the peace of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Jean Marie Bryan a lady of grace beauty and compassion. I am indeed saddened by her departure but glad to have had the pleasure of meeting her. she was a spectacular person, a true woman of strength and integrity. The truth is she was the kind of person who always did all within her powers, to help whomever came to her, seeking help or advise .she was truly a champion. I remember sending countless persons seeking help to her and she never disappointed. Always going the extra mile.
I am glad, honored, humbled and indeed privileged to have known Her
May her soul rest in peace

My favorite memory of Jean is running in track meets with her in High School. She was an excellent athlete, and a wonderful friend. She will always be lovingly remembered. My condolences to Basil, her sons and sisters, Sandra and Carol, and the rest of their family. RIP.

We will carry the memory of Aunt Jean's sweetness and elegance in our hearts. And we will always remember the day of July 4th spent 2 years ago as her guests, the last one in which I had the honor of seeing her and spending time with her. Our deepest condolences go to Basil and their beloved children Kwame and Diallo. And all our affection goes to Sandra, Chelle and Elka: we have you in our hearts and we are close to you, now more than ever. Stefania, Giovanni, Flavia, Ludovica and little Vanni.

Thank you so much for always being so caring about my education and giving me the advice that I had needed. You were such a strong light in our lives and we will miss your presence dearly. You will always be a part of us. Rest In Peace my lovely aunty Jean.

Our sincere condolences to the Bryan family on your loss. May the wonderful memories live in your hearts forever.

Jean (RIP) was extremely supportive especially to the soccer team members in facilitating access to register for even the most highly sought courses. In fact she sometimes coordinated with professors, department Directors, School Deans etc. to get "one more student" added to some *officially closed* courses. Jean and husband BK (Ambassador Basil Bryan formner consulate general at New York) would invite the Jamaican members of the Howard soccer team to their home for Sunday dinner and to watch NCAA Varsity games they had videotaped the previous Saturday. Jean alleviated a lot of stressful situations by smoothly injecting her calming influence whenever disagreements between students and professors escalated to unwanted confrontations which she consistently, skillfully assuaged. She was a good friend and I will miss her...

Mrs. B, as some of us we had come to know her, was the perfect complement to a wonderful whole. Together with her husband, Ambassador Dr. Basil Bryan, they served their respective communities with sincerity, passion, grace, and love.
RIP Mrs B.

Just representing the epitome of what a role model should be. You inspired me to be a better student, young lady and more importsntly to understand that my behaviour will determine my success in school. Jean was the perfect Prefect!

Auntie Jeanie, you were a blessing in our lives and you will forever be in our hearts! We love you and we will miss you! Rest In Peace! Deon, Lavern and the Fletcher Family

My favorite memory of my godmother was no matter my age even as a grown man, it always bought a smile to my face when I would see her and she would call me shookups. To this day I don't know where that name came from but it was her name for me. I will miss you and hearing you call me that name. Love You Aunt Jean.

Barry and I are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Mrs Bryan. Our condolences to Dr Bryan, their children, grandchildren and extended family. May her soul rest in peace.

We all spent lots of summers together going to the beach and having a good time. Jean will truly be missed.

Although it’s very difficult and sad to lose a friend after over 60yrs I will ALWAYS treasure the fond memories and times we shared from High school to present. May her soul RIP and I pray that God grant peace and comfort to her family at this time. She may be out of sight but her legacy is always present. My deepest condolence and as always love.

From Denton and family

Although we live many miles away, across the pond, there isn't a day that goes by that we don’t think about the Wiley's and the Bryan's as our extended families.

We are deeply saddened to hear the news of Jean affectionately our Auntie Jean. We find some comfort in the memories we have of time spent with her including her visit to us at our home in the UK.

A couple of memories that stands out, amongst many for both of us, was during the football or soccer World Cup 2010 when England were playing, Darren hung up the England flag at the top of the stairs which Auntie Jean loved.
There is also never a doubt of her Jamaican heritage and pride, we also remember when Auntie Jean wore her bright yellow Jamaican colours jacket as she sprinted up the hills of Dover castle and the famous white cliffs. She always looked beautiful, even more beautiful in yellow.

We feel honoured to have known our Auntie Jean who welcomed us into her family and her heart and will forever remember her as warm, adventurous, friendly, generous, welcoming, energetic and proud. We are so privileged to have known her. We will miss her always.

Our deepest condolences to Basil our uncle Bas, the Bryan family, the Wiley family, my second mom Sandra, Auntie Carol and all the loving friends and family during this tough time. We are thinking of you all at this difficult time.

Your Tringlish family
Darren & Debra Partridge

Over the many, many years(60+) that I have known Jean I have always been impressed with her humility and loving personality. She was dedicated, diligent, and devoted. She was dedicated to your family and friends. She was diligent in her professional affairs. And most importantly she was devoted to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I do believe that she is now absent from the body and present with the Lord. (2 Corinthians 5:8) May her soul forever rest in love and peace. My heartfelt condolences to her beloved husband, children, relatives, and friends.

Jean, you are already missed.
You were a dedicated Wife, Mother, G-mother, Sister & FRIEND. You lived a full & EXEMPLARY LIFE, one that should be copied by every one who came in contact with you.
We were classmates in High School but never connected. We became very close friends , partners, room-mates & confedante, in Collage and remained so very very close over the years. You were SPECIAL like a sister. My friendship with you and your Family will be CHERISHED for the rest of my life. I will always remember the times we spent together. Even when we were apart we were together.
Dear Jean, rest in peace. We will be together again one day.

To the rest of the Family, Jean was loved by all who came in contact with her. She is at Peace with her LORD . She had a vavacious personality and made friends everywhere she went. She is in pain , no longer. Take comfort in the life she lived.

LOLA

The news that Jean, Aunt Jean has passed is unbelievable, and it has left us feeling shattered and splintered!

She will be forever cherished for her authenticity and her generosity. If she knew something that could enhance the quality of your life, she would just spill it. If she could do something to help you, she would just do it.

She was vital and dynamic, filled with passion and a true zeal for living. Though her body has jettisoned, the totality of who she has been abides.

Dr. Basil Bryan,
On behalf of National Association of Jamaican and Supportive Organizations (NAJASO), we offer heartfelt condolences on the passing of your dear wife, Mrs. Jean Marie Bryan.

We pray that in this time of deep sadness, you and family will find solace in the words of Helen Keller ”What was once enjoyed and deeply loved, we can never lose,
For all that we love deeply become part of us.”

May you and family hold on to grateful and special memories to give you strength during this time of grief, and beyond.

Joyce El-Ali
President
National Association of Jamaican and Supportive Organizations (NAJASO)

Professor Wilfred & Dr Peggy David
We pray that the Grand Architect of the Universe give Basil, Kwame, Diallo and the extended family everlasting peace and much love. While we all mourn Jean’s transition to a better place, it can and should be interpreted through the lens of the biblical sage Ecclesiastes 3
Everything has its time
“For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven; a time to be born and a time to die, a time to weep and a time to laugh; a time for mourning and a time for dancing…”

The Bard of Avon told us in his As You Like It
All the world’s a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man (woman) in his (her) time plays many parts

We were lucky and happy participants with Jean Marie Bryan sharing her quintessential role as a mentor for generations of students in the College of Arts and Sciences at Howard University in Washington, DC. All students she encountered spoke of her kindness, patience, humanity, caring, sharing and selflessness. Jean will certainly be missed. May her soul rest in eternal peace.

My heart is with you all, the Bryan family. Jean always let me know that she was glad to see me, most distinctly when I went to Jamaica for Miss Vera/Mama (Rose)'s funeral; it meant so much to me. I felt so special when she reached out and grabbed my hand at my first Independence Ball in NY. Basil and Jean are a part of so many beautiful memories. Bless you and keep you. Jean is our angel on another plane now. May time soften the wound.🧚🏽‍♀️
