Who would have thought that your visit, almost 35 years ago, to a French lady working at the Fort Belvior PX would bring our families so close together.  Because of you, I met the love of my life, experienced adventures that most people dream of, enjoyed the company of so many wonderful people and, from example, learned more about character and integrity.
You were someone who always made those around you feel like somebody.

I was fortunate to know Jean-Claude through dear friends Flo and Ed Lash. We bonded over shared interests in travel, geopolitics, construction, and sports. Jean-Claude was a remarkable man whose grand life left a lasting impact on me. His genuine love for his family and pride in Flo's achievements were evident. Sadly, I never got to express how grateful I am for knowing him. Staying at their home in Nice and Bordeaux was an incredible experience, as their generosity made me feel like family. I fondly recall joking about the heatwave and discussing the French resilience to conditions. Jean-Claude had a knack for playfully teasing and teaching. At a dinner party, he quizzed me on U.S. history, highlighting the French influence. Our times together, sharing meals and conversations, will be missed. But I hold these cherished memories close to my heart.

I send my deepest sympathies to Catherine and the entire family. I first met Jean Claude through my wife Cathi (also Catherine). He was like a second father to Cathi since they first met in the 1980’s, and he welcomed me with just as warm an embrace. I am honored to now call Flo and Ed dear and beloved friends. Jean Claude was kind and caring, and we had an instant connection. I will forever appreciate his thoughtful warmth and humor, which were clearly appreciated everywhere he went. A special occasion I'll never forget was when we were all together on a tropical holiday, and his work and profession, family, and friends all converged to create a life-long memory of joy and togetherness. I will always carry with me the special warmth, acceptance and comfort he afforded us each and every time our paths crossed. Thank you Jean Claude


Toast for Jean-Claude,

Words that come to mind when I think of Jean-Claude are charming, elegant, humorous, a true gentleman. He belonged to an era when people used to wear suits to fly in an airplane and eat dinner, maybe a time more cordial, well-mannered and gentle. He was a trailblazer, a real-life Indiana Jones with equally good looks.  I had always heard growing up that French men were irresistible and swoon worthy.  I did not believe it until I met Flo’s dad.  He was so handsome and accomplished. I loved his accent, his easy laugh and of course his ping pong skills.

Our family got to see first hand, the work of his hands, when we went to Club Med Punta Cana.  To manage and build a community, a resort, takes a person who has both the technical knowledge, but also an understanding of the human spirit.  We were impressed.

Hearing the glow of pride in Florence’s words as she described his many trips across the oceans, bringing back magical Madagascar stones that enraptured Luke to our recent trip where we stayed at his apartment in Bordeaux and see the other places he had lived in or touched in Southern France was such a privilege.  Jean-Claude, you were a man of vision, a man who was loved, adored and admired.  We raise our glass in your memory.

De longues années  d’ amitié et de voisinage m’ ont permis d’ apprécier la droiture et la bonté naturelle de Jean-Claude…Il partageait ces vertus avec son épouse et sa famille, et a su les inculquer à tous ceux qui ont croisé son chemin durant sa brillante carrière.
Des étincelles d’ humour apparaissaient parfois avec un sourire…comme des étoiles qui brilleront pour toujours.

la 1ère fois que nous avons rencontré Jean-Claude (avec mon mari Philippe lui aussi disparu), c'était sur le port de Papeete, où se déroulait une démonstration de ski nautique, or Jean-Claude venait de réchapper à un accident de ski nautique juste avant d'embarquer pour la Polynésie, si chère à son cœur. Ce fut le début d'une longue amitié et de très beaux souvenirs vécus à Tahiti ou plus tard en métropole avec Jean-Claude et Cathy.
Je garderai de Jean-Claude l'image d'un homme au rayonnement exceptionnel, dynamique, entreprenant, chaleureux, fidèle en amitié et profondément attaché à sa famille.
Je te souhaite Cathy et à toute ta famille du courage pour surmonter cette épreuve, sois assurée de toute mon amitié et de mon soutien.
Je t'embrasse depuis le Gers où se fut si bon de vous accueillir.

Je transmets mes pensées à toute la famille et aux amis de ce cher collègue et ami avec qui j'ai partagé tellement de beaux moments pendant nos nombreuses missions à l'étranger au cours des dernières années. Nos visites de chantier au Maroc et en Afrique de l’Ouest ont toujours été extrêmement agréables et nous ont permis d’échanger non seulement nos expériences de travail mais aussi nos pensées et nos expériences de vie. Nous avons vécu ensemble de magnifiques échanges avec les collègues de travail et, bien évidemment, nous avons eu de nombreux moments de rigolade. Je me rappelle avec émotion de ces longs déplacements à travers tout le Maroc pendant lesquels nous écoutions des chansons françaises en chantant à tue-tête dans la voiture. Never a dull moment !

Jean-Claude était énormément apprécié en raison de sa grande expérience des projets d’ingénierie et d’architecture. Il était très attentif aux besoins et aux préoccupations des gens avec qui nous travaillions. Il était bienveillant et généreux avec tous et il partageait volontiers son savoir avec tous les collègues. Tous l’appréciaient et, même dans les moments très tendus des discussions avec nos contreparties locales, il savait doser humour, sagesse et fermeté, ce qui lui valait un grand respect de la part de tous.

Je suis tellement reconnaissant à la vie d'avoir pu échanger quelques mots par courriel avec Jean-Claude au cours de ce qui, je le comprends maintenant, étaient les derniers jours de sa vie.

I wish to express my sincere condolences to family and friends of Jean-Claude.  As the MCC Infrastructure Director in Morocco, I had the pleasure of working with him on an extraordinary project in the ancient city of Fes.  He played an important role as our consultant Architect to ensure the integrity of the designs for the renovations of the "foudouks" in conformity with World Heritage site requirements. He was a great team player and earned the respect of host country counterparts and stakeholders. He brought a wealth of knowledge and experience, combined with a warm personality and an ability to communicate with people from all walks of life.

I know Jean-Claude since 1964 but never get the chance to know him.
He was the godfather of our first son Charles-Albert and Francois his son is my godson.
But distance was a big obstacle to know each other : they were in Tahiti and we were in Nigeria .
We were able to meet on rare opportunities  last the baptism of two of our grandchildren in Montreal.
And now he has gone and I understand how he is missed by so many of our family and his friends 
This is a very  sad moment and specially for my sister the love of his life .

Jean-Claude was a marvel. Overflowing with love, care, laughter, generosity, kindness, intelligence, and adventure. With life. So much life. I met Jean-Claude when I was a college student, on a language exchange with his daughter, Flo, who is today still, almost forty years later, a dear and beloved friend. Jean-Claude would have wanted me to write this in French. He would laugh when we talked. Your French, he’d say, ça rouille, it’s rusting! But I’d keep trying, Jean-Claude making gentle correction and fun, making me feel accepted and seen as I fumbled along. He was like a second father for me, as Cathy has been like a second Mom. And, Flo, you’re like the sister I never had. You all welcomed me into your home, in Nice, included me in family trips, to Corsica, even, where we explored the stunning mountains and rugged coastline together. When I returned to France a couple years later, hoping to find a job, they welcomed me with open arms and hearts again, in Marseille. Jean-Claude, who shared a sense of adventure, would invite me on long runs, his energy and laughter carrying me up steep, winding hills. He somehow was able to tell stories and carry on jovial, encouraging conversation as I huffed and puffed, trying to keep up with him, and keep my verbs conjugated correctly.  Jean-Claude’s memory will be a blessing. His magnificent spirit will live on, in the family he loved so very, very much, as well as in the countless hearts of all of us who were just so lucky and blessed to know him. Rest in peace, Jean-Claude, et merci. Tu vas me manquer. With all love and condolences to chères Catherine et Flo, Francois, Ed, Céline, Mireille, Juliette, Isabelle, Elisa, Luke, Charles, Louis, Arthur, Alexander, Anna, and Delphine.
