With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of José Garcia on April 29, 2025, at the age of 87. Born in Havana, Cuba, on September 24, 1937, to the late America and Jesus Garcia, José came to the United States in 1959 in search of a better life—a journey that would ultimately define his spirit of resilience, hope, and deep love for family.
He was married to his beloved wife, Antonia Garcia, for 62 years. Together they built a life rooted in devotion, laughter, and enduring love. He was the proud father of two children, Barbara Peña and Carlos Garcia, and the adoring grandfather of six grandchildren: Isabella Peña, Olivia Peña, Alessandra Peña, Constantino Peña, Gabriella Garcia, and Aiden Garcia.
José is survived by his loving sister, Gladys Tauler, who shared a lifelong bond of warmth and support with him.
Known for his ever-present smile and sharp sense of humor, José had a rare gift for making everyone around him feel welcome and at ease. He worked at Philip Morris for 30 years—ironically never once taking up smoking—and after retiring, spent 12 more years with Royal Caribbean, checking in guests at the port. Fittingly, he absolutely loved to take cruises—being at sea, eating good food, meeting new people, and exploring the world brought him immense pleasure.
José’s greatest joy came from the simple pleasures of life: watching his children and grandchildren grow, sharing stories that made everyone laugh, and—perhaps most famously—his passion for shopping. Whether for himself or others, giving brought him much happiness.
His legacy is one of kindness, strength, and unwavering love. He will be remembered every day in the warmth of family gatherings, the echo of shared laughter, and the quiet moments when we feel his presence most.
