An engineer and Coral Gables businessman, Justo F. Sanchez, 89, died peacefully on Saturday, surrounded by his children Justo J. and Lourdes B. Sanchez. The grandson of a historically significant military figure in Cuban independence and a lieutenant in the Spanish Army, Justo moved to Philadelphia and attended Swarthmore. He came of age during the American postwar boom. Returning to Cuba, he worked in the Planning Department at the Cuban Electric Company. He married Elena at Los Pasionistas Catholic Church. His two children were born in Havana. Exiled in Madrid, he was hired as an engineer at a Dutch joint venture company. Back in the United States, he settled in The City Beautiful that awarded him The Key to the City. Miami-Dade County issued two Proclamations to his and daughter Lourdes’ successful business: Society Cleaners. Justo was also a real estate investor. An avid reader and jazz enthusiast, he was an indefatigable traveler with his wife Elena. Moral duties with the homeless and the sick, citizen participation, environmental awareness, public radio and television, serious journalism and good prose were Justo’s priorities. He started reading The New Yorker as a college student. The family seldom broke the ritual of “60 Minutes” after Sunday dinner. A quiet man with an easy smile, he had about him the elegance of mathematical simplicity.
In his memory, make a donation to charities to help the homeless, environmental protection, cancer research and public broadcasting.
Arrangements under the direction of Caballero Rivero Little Havana, MIAMI, FL.
