Layda Erodita Garcia Mendez, beloved mother, grandmother, and matriarch, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at Happy Parents Assisted Living Facility. She was 90 years old.
Layda was born on October 6, 1935, in Matanza, Cuba. In 1951, she moved to Havana, where she spent her formative years and built the foundation of a life centered on family, faith, and resilience. She was the cherished daughter of Edelmiro Garcia Chavez and Delia Gonzalez Garcia and grew up alongside her siblings: Angel Rolando Garcia, Eduardo Garcia, and Roberto Garcia.
She graduated in 1955 from the Instituto de Segunda Enseñanza de Marianao in Cuba. Layda went on to work in accounting with a family-owned CPA firm, demonstrating her strong work ethic and dedication. In later years, she chose retirement in order to devote herself fully to caring for her parents and raising her grandchildren, a role she embraced with pride and love.
Layda met the love of her life, Armando Mendez, in Marianao, Cuba. Together they built a family rooted in unity and perseverance. In 1969, during the historic Freedom Flights, Layda courageously left Cuba with her three children and relocated to New Jersey, where she reunited with extended family and began a new chapter in the United States.
She is survived by her children: Armando Mendez Jr., Carlos Mendez, and Layda R. Morales. She was a devoted grandmother to Layda Morales Cosio, Jay Cee Morales, Armando Mendez III, Carlos Mendez Jr., Monica Mendez Faura, Anthony, Mendez, and Alexa Mendez and was able to experience being a great grandmother to her seven great grandchildren.
Layda shared an especially close bond with her daughter and her son Carlos, relationships that were a constant source of joy and strength in her life.
A woman of deep faith, Layda was Catholic by upbringing and later became deeply involved in the Episcopalian Church. She worked with and faithfully served at Iglesia Episcopal de Todos los Santos, where she was known for her dedication, warmth, and generosity of spirit.
Layda was kind, giving, and endlessly welcoming. She had a contagious positive attitude and an innate ability to empower those around her. Family and friends often sought her out for advice, comfort, and a good laugh, knowing she would always listen without judgment.
She loved celebrating life—especially during Christmas and New Year’s—when her home was filled with music, laughter, and family. She enjoyed Latin oldies, watching football games, and, above all, spending time with those she loved. Her philosophy was simple yet profound: live in the moment. She often reminded her family that if there was a party to be had, the cleaning could wait and worries could be left behind.
Layda Erodita Garcia Mendez will be remembered for her unwavering faith, her joyful spirit, her devotion to family, and her ability to make everyone feel seen, heard, and loved. Her legacy lives on in the generations she nurtured and the countless lives she touched.
