Leonardo Moises Canal (Leo) passed away on Thursday, October 29th, 2020. He died five days after his mother died. He was 65 years old and was loved by his parents, grandparents, brothers and sister, nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. He was born in Barranquilla, Colombia on May 23, 1955. He is survived by his brothers Jose Alejandro Canal, Adolfo Canal and sister Lourdes Buscia, his nephew David and nieces Jennifer, Jessica, Lindsey and Maria, grand nephews Alejandro Joseph, Jaceb, Alejandro David and grand nieces Kailani, Lena and Ariella Victoria.
He was preceded in death by his parents Jose Alejandro Canal and Magdalena "Magola" Canal.
Leo had a very happy childhood in Colombia. He used to play on the streets with his friends and enjoyed going to the movies and the beaches "Puerto Colombia" and “El Rodadero Santa Marta". He was a very good student and was intelligent, organized and independent. He excelled at his high school in Colombia, "Colegio de la Costa".
He moved to Hackensack, New Jersey in 1974, to join his family and pursue a dream of becoming a doctor. He loved dancing and enjoyed to play tennis and soccer with his cousins and friends. He attended Rutgers University and worked two jobs as a full time student. As he was getting ready to take the MCAT to attend medical school, he had a mental breakdown where he was hospitalized for six months at Bergen Pines. With medication and family support, he was able to return to Rutgers and graduate with a bachelor's degree in Biology. He started working and was very happy.
In 1986 he had an accident due to his mental condition that left him a paraplegic. He had to move to Miami to be to be cared for by his brothers and parents.
After his father died in 2006, he went to live in a long term facility where his mom, brothers, sister, nieces and nephews and relatives always visited him. He loved to spend time outside and write letters to his loved ones. He will be missed but we are comforted by the thoughts of him rejoining his parents and being free from the Constraints of his illnesses.

Leo tenía 65 años y fue muy querido por sus padres, abuelos, hermanos y hermana, sobrinas y sobrinos, parientes y amigos. Leo nació en Barranquilla, Colombia el 23 de Mayo de 1955. El dejo a sus hermanos Jose Alejandro Canal y Adolfo Canal y su hermana Lourdes Buscia, su sobrino David Canal y sus sobrinas Jennifer, Jessica, Lindsey y Maria y sus sobrinos nietos Alejandro Joseph, Jaceb, Alejandro David y sobrinas nietas Kailani, Lena y Ariella Victoria.
Antes de él fallecieron sus padres Jose Alejando Canal y Magdalena "Magola" Canal.
Leo tuvo una infancia feliz, jugaba en la calle diferentes juegos con sus amigos de la cuadra. También iba mucho a las playas de "Puerto Colombia" y "El Rodadero", Santa Marta. Él era muy buen estudiante, independiente, inteligente y muy organizado. Leo se graduó de bachiller y sobresalió por sus buenas notas en el "Colegio De la Costa."
Leo se mudó a Hackensack, New Jersey en el 1974 para reunirse con su familia y alcanzar el sueño de ser un doctor. Le gustaba mucho bailar, jugar Tenis y Futbol con sus hermanos, primos y amigos. El estudio en la universidad de Rutgers y trabajo en dos lugares al mismo tiempo. Cuando se estaba preparando para tomar el examen de MCAT requerido para entrar a la escuela de medicina, sufrió un colapso mental y tuvo que estar hospitalizado por 6 meses en el Hospital de Bergen Pines. Con medicación y ayuda de su familia el mejoro y pudo regresar a la universidad en la cual se graduó de Biología. Leo comenzó a trabajar en un laboratorio, tenía novia y era feliz.
En 1986, él tuvo un accidente por su condición mental que lo dejo parapléjico y tuvo que mudarse a Miami para ser cuidado por sus padres y hermanos. Tenía una perrita llamada Tania, a la cual quería mucho.
Después de la muerte de su padre en el 2006, Leo tuvo que irse a un asilo donde su madre, hermanos, sobrinos, sobrinas y parientes lo visitaban. A Leo le gustaba mucho estar en el patio donde le daba comida a los patos y gatos y escribir cartas a su familia. Leo nos va a ser mucha falta, pero nos da la tranquilidad que pueda reunirse con sus padres y ser libre de todas las ataduras físicas y mentales.
