SUNRISE NOVEMBER 29, 1964, SUNSET JANUARY 22, 2025
A CELEBRATION OF LIFE
Leo Moreno, age 60, of Miami Gardens, Florida, passed away on Wednesday January 22, 2025. Leo was born on November 29, 1964, in Puerto Cortés, Honduras to Gloria Carcamo and the late Rolando Moreno. Leo was one of eight children born to his mother, Gloria.
Growing up Leo loved spending time in the water, he was a strong swimmer, he loved the outdoors and was very adventurous. Leo was raised by his father Rolando, and paternal grandmother, Evangelina Reyes. Leo’s father passed away when Leo was nine years old. Leo loved and admired his father and often spoke fondly about him and their relationship.
As a young man, Leo embarked on his biggest adventure when he decided to leave Honduras and emigrate to the United States, Miami, Florida, to be exact. Leo came to the United States as many of us and our families did, for a better life and more and better opportunities. Little did Leo know that his life was about to change for the better. Once in Miami, Leo had the great good luck, to meet and eventually marry the love of his life, Maria Wedderburn. Leo and Maria were married for thirty-two years, honoring their vow to remain together until “death do us part.”
Leo was kind, generous, funny and approachable. He never met a stranger. Leo loved people and he showed it through his warmth, affection and his loyalty. Everyone who knew Leo loved him too; it was impossible not to love him. Leo never stopped moving, was tireless. He was a self-taught handyman and could fix anything. He often gave away his time. He was always available to friends, family and neighbors, helping them complete projects, lending out his tools, or making his truck available to pick an item they needed.
The best of Leo was saved for his wife, close friends and his chosen family. Leo had a close bond with his wife’s mother, the late Ana Wedderburn. The two spent countless hours together. Ana would spoil him by cooking his favorite meals while Leo kept himself busy tending to her yard and running errands for her. Leo and Ana’s favorite hobby was ganging up on Maria two to one--to get their way, and they usually got their way.
Leo was adopted by his wife’s family and extended family, who were drawn to his generous and fun-loving nature. Leo charmed the wife’s family by becoming fluent in “Cubano” and could often be heard causing family members to scream with laughter upon hearing him speak. Leo had a soft shoulder and provided a listening ear for so many. He gave good advice and would put you at ease. Leo cared and everyone could feel it.
We have lost a warm and loving light in Leo Moreno. He was a devoted husband, son-in-law, cousin-in-law, nephew-in-law; an adopted brother, son, uncle and best friend to many.
Leo is survived by his loving wife of thirty-two years, Maria Wedderburn, his cousins in-law, Peggy Duncan, Milton Ibanez, Amanda and baby cousin Damien Ibanez, Lina Beckford and Maya Valverde; his son Tyreke Sterile; his friend aunt-in-law, Elena Duncan; his adopted brother Alejandro Rodriguez; his mother Gloria Carcamo; his surviving siblings, Luis Moreno, Marina Moreno, Elena Moreno, Roberto Medina, Karen Medina and Sayra Medina Martinez and by all those who loved him including the members of the Duncan, Wedderburn and Beckford clans.
A visitation for Leonel will be held Friday, January 31, 2025 from 5:00 pm until 11:00 pm at Caballero Rivero Little Havana, 3344 SW 8th Street, Miami, FL 33135. A burial service will occur Saturday, February 1, 2025 at 12:00 pm at Caballero Rivero Dade North, 1301 Opa-Locka Blvd, Miami, FL 33167.
