Lorraine Virginia Smith, 83, of Miami Springs, Florida, passed away at home surrounded by her loved ones on September 5, 2025. Lorraine was born on October 25th, 1941, in Bogota, New Jersey to Louis and Margaret Remschel, living a life defined by a purpose to help others.
From her earliest moments, Lorraine’s gentle and nurturing soul guided her on a life-long journey upon which she selflessly cared for the sick and injured as a Registered Nurse. Lorraine viewed each day as an opportunity to share love, compassion, and wisdom with all and was dedicated to her profession and family. Throughout her life, she embodied a spirit of dogged determination and uncommon grit to achieve professional and personal success.
Lorraine’s enduring love of family - which included her many, many, pets - has left an indelible mark upon those privileged to have felt her affection. Beyond her unwavering dedication to family, she enjoyed the natural beauty of gardens, the intricacies of interior design, promoting community health and fitness, the joy of gathering around the table for a meal with loved ones, and volunteering, especially at school, where she wholeheartedly dedicated her time and energy.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her father, Louis Remschel; her mother, Margaret Remschel; and her brothers, Louis, Charles, and Robert Remschel. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Joseph Smith, M.D.; her children, Laura Mutz (Tim Sellick), Richard (“Dougie”) Mutz, Jr. (Ellie), and David Smith (Marra); her grandchildren, Zackary Mutz, Colin Mutz, Jack Smith, Sadie Smith, and Sloane Smith. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Humane Society of Greater Miami (www.humanesocietymiami.org).
The family wishes to thank all the family, friends, and caregivers for their continued support during this time and the preceding years. Lorraine’s legacy of love, compassion, and strength will forever inspire all who knew her.
