I have so many beautiful memories of my grandmother that it’s hard to choose just one.

One of my favorites goes back to when I first came to this country at 12 years old. My grandmother and I shared a love for books, and she would take me to the bookstore almost every day. What many people don’t know is that those trips helped me learn English. I would sit with books and a Spanish-to-English dictionary, translating words and teaching myself the language. I was too shy to speak English around others, but she knew I could. For a while, it was our little secret. She gave me a place where I felt comfortable enough to learn at my own pace, and I’ll always carry that with me.

I also remember the spontaneous trips she and my grandfather would take, the countless conversations we had, the times I would stop by just to see her, and the little snacks she would make because she remembered exactly what I liked. She had a way of remembering the smallest details about the people she loved.

Even as an adult, when I had the opportunity to live with her again for a few months, she would sneak into my room and fold my laundry. I would come back to find everything neatly folded. No matter how grown I was, I was still her little girl.

There are so many moments I will treasure, from bookstore visits and breakfasts together to simply sitting in the same room while she read and my grandfather watched television.

She loved her family deeply. I know because I heard her speak about her children and grandchildren with so much love over the years.

She always said she had lived a full life, and I know she did. But no matter how full a life is, saying goodbye is never easy.

I will forever be grateful that I got to be her granddaughter, for all the years, all the conversations, all the little things, and especially for the love she gave me from the very beginning of my life.

I love you, Grandma. I will miss you more than words can express.
