Mauvealeen Melvonie Smellie, lovingly known as Hopie, was a woman of rare strength, faith, and radiant grace. Born on November 12, 1954, she lived a life defined by purpose, compassion, and unwavering devotion to God, family, and community. On March 1, 2026, she entered eternal rest, leaving behind a legacy of love, generosity, and quiet impact that will echo for generations.
Hopie was a philanthropist, an entrepreneur, and a visionary builder. She created businesses from the ground up and helped others scale theirs, often working in silence while the blessings spoke loudly. She believed deeply in integrity, fidelity, and honesty, living each day with a heart anchored in faith and service. Like the woman described in Proverbs 31, she clothed herself with strength and dignity, and those closest to her called her blessed, her son called her blessed, her husband called her blessed, and all who encountered her felt the truth of it.
She was a giver by nature, often resisting the idea of receiving anything in return, because everything she gave came straight from her heart. Hopie had a rare gift: she sparked something in everyone she met. She ignited hope, stirred courage, and left people stronger than she found them. She spoke with intention, never wasting words, yet every word she offered landed exactly where it was needed, lifting and building the spirit of the listener.
Her presence carried joy and vibrant energy. Whether sharing laughter, dancing to music, sending an encouraging voice note, cooking a meal with generous hands, or enjoying the quiet thrill of bird hunting, Hopie embraced life fully. She loved deeply, real, hard, and without reservation.
Though she did not always reveal the work she was building behind the scenes, many now live in the blessing of what she quietly planted.
Mauvealeen leaves behind her beloved son, Omar; five stepchildren; two brothers; two sisters; thirteen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a wide circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless others whom she lovingly embraced as family.
Though she has departed this earthly life, her spirit remains alive in every lesson she taught, every life she uplifted, and every seed of kindness she planted.
Her life was a testimony of faith, generosity, and quiet power. And indeed, her memory will forever remain a guiding light.
A Visitation & Celebration of Life will be held at Caballero Rivero Woodlawn South, 11655 SW 117 Ave, Miami, Florida 33186, on March 21, 2026, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
