Norberta Suarez

Norberta Suárez nacida en Cabañas, Provincia Pinar del Río, Cuba el 6 de junio del 1921 falleció el 7 de octubre del 2021 en Miami, Florida. Norberta, más conocida como Berta en familia y por sus amistades, es la última de los 10 hermanos y hermanas de la familia Méndez, todos oriundos de nuestro querido pueblo, Cabañas.

La pérdida de su madre Ramona Alonso y luego de su padre Constantino Méndez forjó lazos estrechos entre los hermanos y las hermanas, unificándose en un núcleo familiar insuperable. Esa unión llevó a una colaboración y apoyo de unos a los otros que se le acredita por el éxito de los Méndez.

El apoyo de esa hermandad también proporcionó los estudios en la escuela normal de Pinar del Río no solo a Berta, sino también a su hermana Águeda. A continuación de sus graduaciones, las hermanas ejercieron como maestras en la escuela primaria pública de Cabañas. Donde realizarían sus vidas profesionales y personales hasta sus partidas a los Estados Unidos.

Precisamente fue en Cabañas donde Berta conoció, se enamoró y se casó el 25 de enero del 1947 con el amor de su vida, el comerciante Miguel Suárez. En Cabañas nacieron, también, sus tres hijos, de mayor a menor: Miguel, Adelaida y Marta Elena.

Siempre emprendedora y dedicada a la educación, Berta se recibió de Doctora en Pedagogía en el 1948. Su entrega a la educación la llevó de maestra a directora del centro escolar Carlos Castilla del Busto, y más tarde a inspectora escolar del término educacional de Cabañas. Reteniendo ese cargo hasta su partida a los Estados Unidos en el 1962.

Como a todos los cubanos, la vida en el exilio no le fue fácil. La falta del idioma inglés, le evitó continuar ejerciendo en Miami su profesión de maestra. Al verse sola con tres hijos, y con ansias de contribuir al bienestar de su familia, Berta encontró modestos trabajos en varias fábricas de ropas y últimamente en “Fabulous Diamonds” de donde se jubiló.

Una de las sorpresas más agradables que recibió Berta, fue el día que su hija menor le leyó unos artículos del periódico en español. Completamente inesperada fue esa lectura ya que Marta Elena no había recibido lecciones de escribir y leer en español. La explicación que Marta Elena brindó en aquel entonces es que ella también le ponía atención a las clases de leer y escribir que Berta le daba a una vecina. ¡Siempre maestra, nuestra Mima!

De nuevo, su vocación a la enseñanza por vida, le otorgaba a Berta la oportunidad de impactar el camino de otros. Su hijo Miguel cuenta como el ayudó al hijo de un vecino calificar para la clase de Español del 3er nivel. Con el tutelaje brindado al estudiante de secundaria, Akhil logró alzar su nota de promedio de “C” a una de “A”, cual lo calificó para el próximo nivel de español. Siguiendo sus pasos, su hija Adelaida también escogió la enseñanza como carrera; ejerciendo como profesora hasta que se retiró.

Al pasar los años se reunieron de nuevo en Miami las cinco hermanas y los cinco hermanos con sus varias familias. Inclusive los tres hermanos Suárez, su esposo Miguel, Jesús y Taurino arribaron juntos a Miami. Habiendo renovado los estrechos lazos de amor y hermandad, la llegada de esta extensa familia le brindó a Berta calma y felicidad con que lograba sobrellevar los achaques del exilio.

La llegada a Miami de su esposo Miguel en el 1965, trajo grandes regocijos y alegrías a sus tres hijos. Aún más a Berta, quien se reunía de nuevo con su amor eterno.

En una familia grande siempre hay algo o alguien que festejar y pesares que sufrir. Días festivos habían en abundancia, pero ninguno más grande que La Noche Buena. Su humilde casa, decorada con gran entusiasmo, presenció más de treinta años consecutivos de celebraciones de La Noche Buena; llegando a acoger a más de 40 festejantes a cenar. Toda preparación y cocina era dividida entre toda familia. Nunca supo mejor el cochinito que cuando lo cocinaba su hermano Není. En estas fiestas navideñas las anfitrionas se sentaban solamente a la hora de cenar.

Rogamos a Dios nos seda la reunión de Berta y Miguel Suárez por la eternidad.

Berta es sobrevivida por sus hijos Miguel y Alicia Suarez, Adelaida Ballester Viuda de Aníbal, Michael y Marta Elena O’Connor. Sus nietos Maritza y Juan Carlos con sus tres hijas Rebecca, Teresa y Camila. También la sobrevive su cuñada Nadina Méndez.

Sus sobrinas y sobrinos son: Hilda Sardiñas (difunta); Ester de la Ó y familia; Raul Méndez (difunto) y familia; Magdalena Villa y familia; Miguel “Michael” Méndez y familia; Teresita Méndez y familia; Joaquinito Méndez y familia; Dinorah Méndez; Daisy Nicolella y familia; Marcelito Méndez; José “Pepito” Hernández y familia; y los hermanos Macusa y Jesusito Couselo con su familia.

Recordamos hoy a sus difuntas hermanas: Clemencia, Antonia, Rosa y Águeda. Así como a sus difuntos hermanos: Dionisio (“Není”), Miguel, Marcelo, Joaquín y José Ramón (“Chicho”).

Expresamos nuestros agradecimientos a tres magnificas personas quienes les prestaron un cuidado excepcional a nuestra Mima a través de su larga convalecencia y final. Ellas son: Rosario, Lizett y Lili. Muy agradecidos también por tanto cariño y apoyo a todas las personas del hospicio que asistieron en su cuidado.

Norberta Suárez, born in Cabañas, Province of Pinar del Rio, Cuba on June 6, 1921, passed away on October 7, 2021 in Miami, Florida. Norberta, who was better known as “Berta” to friends and family, is the last of ten siblings who made up “The Mendezes," all born and raised in our beloved town of Cabañas.

The loss of their mother, Ramona Alonso, and later that of their father, Constantino Méndez, forged unbreakable bonds among brothers and sisters, unifying them into an unassailable nucleus. Such bonds engendered collaboration and support among each other which is credited for the Mendez success.

That same brotherhood support also provided for the education in the teachers college of not only Berta, but also and her sister Águeda. Pursuant to their graduations, both sisters became primary school teachers in the public school in Cabañas. Where they practiced their vocation until their departure to the United States.

It was also in Cabañas that Berta met, fell in love and married the love of her life, the grocer Miguel Suárez, on January 25, 1947. Cabañas also witnessed the birth of their three children, from oldest to youngest: Miguel, Adelaida and Marta Elena. To her children, Berta was known as “Mima.”

Always driven and fully committed to education, Berta pursued her graduate education receiving her Doctorate in Education in 1948. Her dedication to education saw her rise from teacher to Principal at the Carlos Castilla del Busto elementary school, and later ascend to School Inspector for the Cabañas educational district. She held that title until her departure for the United States in 1962.

Like most Cubans, Berta found that life in exile was very difficult. The lack of command of the English language kept her from continuing to serve as teacher, her chosen profession, in Miami. Finding herself alone with three children, and with the desire to contribute to the well-being of her children, Berta found modest employment in dress manufacturing businesses and finally at Fabulous Diamonds until her retirement.

One of the most pleasant surprises that Berta received was the day she listened to her youngest daughter, Marta Elena, read articles from the Spanish newspaper. This was a completely unexpected development given that Marta Elena had never received formal training in reading and writing in Spanish. Explaining her newly exhibited abilities, Marta Elena shared at the time that she was actually paying attention to the reading and writing classes that Berta was giving to a neighbor. Always a teacher, that’s our “Mima!”

Again, her life-long devotion and commitment to education, had offered Berta the opportunity to impact the life of others. Her son, Miguel, recounts how he helped the son of a neighbor qualify for Third Level Spanish. Tutoring the High School student in Spanish, helped Akhil raise his Spanish grade point average from a C to an A; which qualified him to take Spanish at the next level. Following in her example, daughter Adelaida also chose education as a career. Adelaida was an educator for her entire career until her retirement.

Years later the five sisters and five brothers and their families reunited in Miami. Including the three Suárez brothers, her husband Miguel, Jesus and Taurino who together arrived in Miami. Renewing close family ties and the shared love, the arrival of the extended family brought Berta calm and happiness that helped her overcome the challenges of exile.

Her husband’s arrival in 1965 brought much happiness and joy to their three children. Moreover, it reunited Berta with the love of her life.

Large families offer many opportunities to celebrate and setbacks to endure. There were many festive days, but none more significant and important than Christmas Eve Feast (“Noche Buena”). Her humble home, enthusiastically decorated, bore witness to more than 30 consecutive years of celebrating Christmas Eve Feasts; seating more than 40 guests and families at the table. All preparations and cooking were divided among the family. There were several fortunate years when her brother, Není, would roast the pork. It was delicious! At these Christmas Eve Feasts, the hostesses sat only at mealtime.

We pray that God reunites Berta and Miguel Suárez for eternity.

Berta is survived by her sons and daughters Miguel and Alicia Suárez; Adelaida Ballester, Anibal’s widow; Michael and Marta Elena O’Connor. Her grandchildren Juan Carlos and Maritza with their three daughters Rebecca, Teresa y Camila. Berta is also survived by her sister-in-law Nadina Méndez.

Berta’s nieces and nephews are: Hilda Sardiñas (deceased); Ester de la Ó and family; Raul Méndez (deceased) and family; Magdalena Villa and family; Miguel “Michael” Méndez and family; Teresa Méndez and family; Joaquin Méndez and family; Dinorah Méndez; Daisy Nicolella and family; Marcelo Méndez; Jose “Pepito” Hernández and family; sister and brother Macusa and Jesus Couselo and his family.

We remember today her deceased sisters: Clemencia, Antonia, Rosa and Águeda. Just as we remember her deceased brothers: Dionisio (“Není”), Miguel, Marcelo, Joaquín y José Ramón (“Chicho”).

We expressed our gratitude for three magnificent ladies who provided exceptional care to our “Mima” throughout her convalescence and passing. They are: Rosario, Lizett and Lili. We are also appreciative for the love, care and support provided by the hospice personnel.
