Born in Havana, Cuba, he earned fifth place in the Mr. Cuba bodybuilding contest. In 1955, he left Cuba for New York City, where he met his future wife, Berenice at the Ateneo Cubano, a family club in Manhattan. The first time they met, he told her all about an Elizabeth Taylor movie he had just seen. For more than an hour, he told her every bit of the plot, while she stared at his green eyes, black hair, and bulging muscles. Here began their beautiful love story and they were married in 1956. They remained wedded until his death, nearly 64 years later. Roberto and Berenice had three children, Robert, Walter and Susan; and five grandchildren, Brian, Kevin, David, Natalie and Nicole. Roberto is also survived by his brothers, Gonzalo and Rene, and his sister, Elsa.
Roberto was a Catholic man of great faith who loved the United States and devoted himself completely to his wife, children and grandchildren. Miami was his beloved home for the final 54 years of his life. He was particularly fond of boxing, baseball, tango dancing, singing, and the fine art of conversation. Until the age of 81, he would go tango dancing with Berenice until 3:00 in the morning! He also loved to sing and dance to countless Spanish ballads. He had an incredible zest for life!
He will be missed greatly by all who knew him.
A facebook online live streaming of services contined for Roberto will be held Wednesday, July 22, 2020 at 11:00 AM. A graveside service will occur from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Our Lady of Mercy Cemetery, 1411 NW 25 Street, Doral, FL 33172.
