Romulo “Romy” Tan Gana Cuy, MD, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2026, in Coral Gables, FL, surrounded by his family and loved ones. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, physician, and man of deep faith, he lived a life defined by service, quiet strength, and dedication to those he loved.
Born in the Philippines, Romy earned his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila. After immigrating to the United States, he completed his residency in Internal Medicine at French Hospital in New York City and his fellowship in Gastroenterology at NYU Medical Center and the Manhattan VA Hospital. He served as an Attending Physician, Chief of Service, and Associate Chief of Gastroenterology at St. Francis Hospital in Jersey City, NJ, where he was honored with the Medal of Honor in 1991. He built a distinguished 28-year career in private practice in Jersey City before retiring in 2001.
Faith was a cornerstone of Romy’s life. A devout Catholic, he served for 15 years in the Teaching Ministry of the Catholic Charismatic community within the Archdioceses of Newark and Allentown. He was an active member of St. Mary Roman Catholic Church in Alpha, NJ, and offered support and compassion to others through his involvement in a cancer support group.
Romy was a man of quiet intellect and reflection, but was also an avid fan of sports and delicious food (especially his wife’s recipes!). He found joy in reading WWII history, listening to classical music, watching the New York Mets, and late in life, discovered the tranquility and satisfaction of painting. He approached life with thoughtfulness, humility, and grace, and his guidance was deeply valued by those closest to him.
More than his professional accomplishments, Romy’s greatest pride was his family. He shared a lifelong marriage with his beloved wife, Caridad “Carrie” Montesa Cuy, whom he married in 1963. Together they built a home centered on love, faith, and commitment to family. Carrie preceded him in death in 2024, and her memory remained ever present in his heart.
At home, Romy was a steady and dedicated provider. He was a devoted father and grandfather who leaves behind his greatest legacy, his beloved children and grandchildren:
Dennis and his wife Sarah, and their children Kathryn and Aidan; Romulo Jr. and his wife Omaida, and their children Peter James and Julia; Kenneth and his wife Julie, and their children Brandon and Brian; Janet and her husband Jeff.
Romy’s life was defined not only by his accomplishments in medicine, but by the love he shared with Carrie, the family they built together, and the values he passed on to future generations. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered with love.
