Sergio Ayala, aged 87, passed away on May 14, 2024 in Miami, Florida surrounded by his loving family. He was born on December 28, 1936 in Aguada de Pasajeros, Cuba.
Sergio graduated from La Progresiva Boarding School in Cárdenas, Cuba where he met his future wife. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Maria Teresa Rodriguez, his daughters: Mayté and Beatriz; three granddaughters: Vanessa (Tim and great-granddaughter Mia), Samantha (great-granddaughter Elena), Kristina (Zach); his brother Nelson (Jill), a niece and many nephews as well as countless lifelong friends.
Sergio left Cuba in 1957 to study engineering in Fairfield, Iowa. There he continued his hard work, graduated as a mechanical engineer, and secured his family’s exit from Cuba. He was hired by General Electric where he had a distinguished 32 year career traveling the world and eventually retiring (albeit still consulting) in Islamorada, FL. Sergio returned to his roots by volunteering with La Progresiva’s campus in Miami, FL where his passion of securing success for the generations to come will live on. His legacy will endure through his family and the many friendships he fostered throughout his life.
May he rest in peace.
