Sheila and I met in elementary school and were friends from that time on.  We became  best friends in high school where we laughed at silly things, passed notes between classes, and enjoyed doing simple things together.  Sheila had a great sense of humor and could always make me laugh.  We both attended Iowa State University after HS graduation. I recognized what a caring and giving person Sheila was as she decided to pursue a degree in education.  She worked at the Convalescent Home for Children in Johnston, Iowa after college graduation and encouraged me to do the same.  She and I from then on shared a passion for children with special needs. I was in Sheila's wedding and was sad when she moved to Miami, but knew she was in good hands with Guille. While Sheila went on to pursue a career working in assistive technology, I became an early childhood special education teacher.  We had many conversations about how to best meet the needs of the children we served.   Sheila was a great friend and educator.  She has left her mark on the world. I had the opportunity to see what a wonderful mother Sheila was too.   She was soft spoken, loving, encouraging, and patient with her kids. Her kindness and compassion live on in her children.   My condolences to the family who will miss Sheila beyond measure.

Sheil-la-la. I can't believe you are gone.  We "grew up" together as young adults working at UCP where you were an amazing teacher who knew how to bring out the gifts of each child with severe and profound impairments. I learned so much from you and your intentional approach to help them reach their potential through assistive tech but mostly with your attention to their needs. You were brilliant!. You, Yvonne, Ingrid and I were young, idealistic and determined to learn.  We all  became close friends, supporting each other through marriages, children, divorce, loss of loved ones, other personal tragedies and triumphs. We became friends for life. Thank you for 35+ years of friendship.  I will always think of you when I hear a  Dave Matthews or John Mellencamp song and will always root for Iowa State (where you met Guille). One of my last moments with you at memory care is of us " singing" Sweet Caroline together. I am so glad you are free from the struggle and can now remember how much you are loved. Rest in peace my dear friend. I love you.
