June 21, 1952 – June 7, 2026
Tommy Thompson Jr., a self-made man of immense stature, hard work, and unconditional love for his family, has passed away. He leaves behind a legacy defined by perseverance, adventure, and a big heart that touched everyone close to him.
Roots of Resilience
Tommy’s extraordinary journey began in Rivas, Nicaragua, born to his beloved parents, Tommy Thompson Sr. and Margarita Aguilar de Thompson. He grew up sharing his early years and a lifetime of the Thompson clan always together and always supportive of each other with his siblings: Alberto Thompson, Kenneth Thompson, Carolina Thompson, Mary Thompson, and Dora Maria Thompson. The strong foundation built with his parents and siblings shaped the man of grit and determination he would become.
From Humble Beginnings to Global Success
Tommy’s life was an extraordinary testament to the American Dream. He moved to New Orleans with practically nothing, facing early struggles alongside his family with grit. Whether working paper routes or pulling shifts at a gas station, he refused to be defeated by circumstances. Through sheer hard work and perseverance, he rose through the ranks of multinational oil companies, embarking on a career that took him across the globe.
He lived abroad in Guatemala, Colombia, and Venezuela, and traveled everywhere from Dubai to Egypt, ultimately becoming a highly successful, self-made executive.
A Dedicated Family Man
At the center of Tommy’s world was the love of his life, Yolanda Mata. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised two children: Tommy Thompson and Yolande Marguerite Thompson. As a father, he ensured his children had the tools to succeed, putting them through college and setting them firmly on their career paths.
While he was known to have a commanding, larger-than-life presence outside the house—and a famously stern, but big-hearted demeanor inside it—those who knew him best knew the immense depth of his care. He loved his family fiercely and unconditionally.
A Proud Grandfather’s Greatest Joy
Tommy lived the fullest life he possibly could, and his greatest victories were measured in the milestones of his five beloved grandchildren. Because of the love, time, and lessons poured into them by Tommy and their grandmother Yolanda, they grow forward as better people.
He was determined to see them thrive. When his health made it difficult, his family brought the milestones to him; he got to see his grandson, Rafael, graduate high school when Rafa proudly wore his cap and gown right into the hospital room just for him. He watched Tommy and Laura Kate head off to college, seeing them both step into the future and excel in their classes. He watched Alexandra grow into high school, cheering them all on from Karate tournaments to dance competitions, spanning from flamenco to hip hop, to anything and all including his grandchildren. And though Daniel was his youngest grandchild, Tommy was blessed to welcome him into the world and watch him grow into a vibrant six-year-old. From family weddings, family gatherings, birthdays, and all the many family gatherings, Tommy was there for it all, anchored by his pride in his family.
An Army of Love: Family and Los Indomables
Beyond his immediate household, Tommy was the pillar of a vast, fiercely loyal family network. He shared a deep affection with his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, whom he loved and treated exactly like his own siblings. He leaves behind an army of a supportive family, including a ton of nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly, and who all deeply desired to pay their respects to an uncle who meant so much to them.
Tommy also left a rich legacy of friendships spanning all corners of the world. Chief among them was a legendary inner circle of friends known affectionately as Los Indomables—The Untamed. Together, they lived up to the name, sharing a lifetime of wild adventures, laughter, and an unbreakable bond of loyalty.
Captain, Grill Master, and Mentor
Tommy’s truest passions were horses, boats, the golf course, and the open water. He spent countless weekends in the Florida Keys, teaching his grandkids how to navigate the waters and cast a line. He passed down the art of fishing and boating with a firm but loving hand—including the unforgettable scoldings when a dock rope wasn't secured fast enough. Today, the family lovingly imitates those exact moments, retelling the stories with smiles and laughter, remembering the good times.
Tommy also loved to feed the people he cared about. Whether he was manning the grill for one of his famous BBQs or preparing his signature moqueca de camarão, his table was always a place of gathering, laughter, and abundance.
Remember Him in Life and With Love
Death happens only once, but luckily for Tommy, life was many years of family love, adventure, laughter, and good times. Let’s remember Tommy in life, not death—for that final illness was no longer him. Instead, let’s remember him on a boat, behind the grill, out on the golf course, and teaching his grandchildren to fish.
To those who entered his family, Tommy became much more than just adding you as another member of the family; he became a confidant, a second father, and a trusted advisor whose guidance on work and life was invaluable. Tommy believed in people. He believed in his family's potential, supported their dreams, and left an indelible mark on everyone who trusted his counsel. His family carries forward the hope that his grandchildren will continue to emulate his tireless work ethic, his resilience, and his absolute devotion to family.
May he be received into Heaven with open arms, where the waters are always calm, the fish are always biting, and the grill is always ready. He will be deeply missed, forever respected, and celebrated always in life and with love.
